Figuring Out How Many Steps You Take in a Mile (Very Easy Math)steemCreated with Sketch.

Good morning, Steemians! This morning I went for my usual 1.5 mile walk down the street and back. While I was walking, I wondered to myself, "How many steps does it take for me to go one-tenth of a mile?" Then I thought, with that information I could easily multiple by ten to figure out how many steps I take in a mile. I had heard that the average person's stride is about 3 feet per step, so I wanted to put that to the test as well.

I was at 1.2 miles into my walk and stared at my GPS, waiting for it to change to 1.3 miles so I could begin counting. It finally changed after what seemed like a very long time. I began counting every right foot step that I took (so I would need to multiple the final number of steps by two to get the total in one-tenth of a mile.)

I remember when I was younger, my dad told me that usually one-tenth of a mile was the distance between three telephone poles on the highway (don't know if this holds true anymore.)

So, I walked and walked, trying to walk as normally as possible, and I got to the number 105. Then my GPS tracker thing changed from 1.3 miles to 1.4 miles. So I took 105 and multiplied by two to get 210 steps total per one-tenth mile. Multiply that by ten and you get 2100 steps per mile for me.

Since there are 5,280 feet in a mile, we simply divide 5280 by 2100 and we get 2.51. So this means that on average, I take a two and a half foot step when walking normally. Now, to be more accurate, I would have to literally count every step for a whole mile, because who knows, maybe the GPS was off a little in counting from one-tenth mile to the next. I'm going to go ahead and trust it as pretty accurate data.

So, in conclusion, I learned that I personally take ~2100 steps/mile and that my average stride is ~2.5 feet/step.

Pretty cool, huh? When I'm walking (or doing anything) I sometimes begin counting things and doing math in my head. Do you do this kind of thing too?

Thanks for reading, Steemians! And a great morning to you!

When I was in the army we used to count our steps to 100 meters. Then, we had these beads on a piece of chord we called "Ranger Beads" we'd slide one over every km. Keeps your mind busy.

Hmmm, Interesting! Yes, I bet it did!

It is a beautiful picture.
I'm following you.

Thank you for following me, but it's not my original picture. I never claimed it to be. The cite is linked underneath it :)
