What is EVM? How does it work?

What is EVM or electronic voting machine?

Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are an easy way to vote. The machine has a pre-programming microchip that shows the results of each poll immediately. Instead of sealing the ballot, voter can vote by pressing the switch next to the voter's preferred symbol. Each booth needs an EVM. It is shared in several units. The units are: 1. Ballot unit: This unit is within the booth. Through this, the voters vote for their favorite candidates. 2. Control unit: The control unit is on the front of the assistant presiding officer. 3. Display Unit: A large display unit is kept with EVM, which is placed in a place where voting-related people are seen in the booth. 4. Battery unit: This machine needs to run a 12 volt battery. The machine can run in the battery all day. As a result no additional power is required. 5. Smart Card & Master Card: An ID card is issued to the Assistant Presiding Officer to manage a voting machine. Without this card, the control unit is not possible to manage. These units are in different positions, but are connected to each other by wire.

How does EVM work?

EVM Control Unit, with an Assistant Presiding Officer responsible for an election center. The digital display at the front of this unit. On the opposite side there are some switches, including start switches, ballot switches, memory reset switches, final result switches and close buttons. To start the vote, press the start switch. Then pressing the ballot switch, the Assistant Presiding Officer sent the booth to vote for the voter. When this switch is pressed, the ballot unit, in the other part of EVM in the booth, is effective for a vote. As soon as voting, the ballot unit became void once again, until the control unit of the ballot switch was being pressed again. When the voter is released after the voting, the Assistant Presiding Officer will then enforce the ballot unit by pressing the ballot switch. If the voting is completed in this way, the voting process will be closed and the final result switch will be implemented after the close switch is pressed. If it is pressed one by one, the number of votes received by one candidate after the sorting of the ballot unit comes out.

In the other part of EVM, the ballot unit is kept in the booth. Voter will see a green light burning beneath the ballot unit. That means give your vote. The name and symbol of the candidate is arranged on the ballot unit. There is a switch beside each symbol. Voter press the switch next to its preferred symbol. When the vote is taken, the red light on the bottom of the voter ballot unit will burn. That is, the vote was accepted. When a new vote is taken, a vote will be added to the front unit of the control unit placed before the assistant presiding officer. After that he will send another booth to the voters and will see the green light in the ballot unit. This will continue the process of voting process.

How does EVM work in Bangladesh elections?

Through the series of research, Bangladesh has been promoted to a stage with EVM. Election Commissioner Brig Gen (Retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury will work on how EVM will work in the elections, said the EVM designed with the traditional voting system. It will not be possible to vote before the polling day, and it has the advantage of showing the old voting no. Who will make this machine?

BUET and Machine Tools Factory (BMTF) have been doing many research for a long time. Earlier, BUET also helped create EVMs. An expert committee headed by Professor Jamilur Reza Chowdhury has been working for a long time. It will be collected through the BMTF army-controlled institutions. Some of the software and designs or parts may collect from the outside but may add BMTF But considering the safety and other aspects, the Election Commission will finalize the technical assistance of BMTF.
