9 Everyday Foods that have been BANNED Across the World

1. Kinder Surprise

These fun little treats contain a plastic egg with a toy inside, and are a big hit with kids in Europe and Asia. However, even though other Kinder products are popular here in the USA, it was basically impossible to get hold of a Kinder Surprise until very recently.

This was because of a 1938 law which prohibited the sale of food that contained a non-edible element, such as the plastic found here. However, manufacturers found a loophole to get around the law, and they are now much easier to get hold of.

1. Artificial dyes

Artificial dyes, as used in confectionery items like Skittles and Smarties, are pretty commonplace in the US. However, the European Union has pretty strict guidelines on their use, so when these products are exported to Europe, sweets with unnatural dyes are either replaced or have their dyes changed for natural ones.

1. Tyson chicken

Although a very popular American chicken manufacturer, Tyson Foods chicken was banned in several countries including Norway, Russia, and Australia. This came after it was revealed that Tyson were in the practice of injecting antibiotics, steroids, anti-inflammatory drugs and even KETAMINE into their poultry.

After all of this came to light, Tyson representatives promised to stop the use of such products which they did in September 2017 – hence the ‘all natural’ label shown above.

More than half of the countries in the EU banned GMO products in 2015 for its potential toxicity, and the decrease of the nutritional value of the products.

1. Bread

I know what you’re thinking – bread? Really?! Well, to be specific, we’re talking about bread with a specific ingredient – a type of baking powder named potassium bromate, which helps to keep bread fresh and moist for a long time after purchase.

However, this additive has also been known to cause headaches, skin rashes, and problems with digestion, which is why its use has been banned in Canada, China, and the EU.

Specific lines of Pringles, such as the fat free Sour Cream & Onion flavor seen above, have been banned in Canada and Europe.

This is due to their use of Olestra, a synthetic fat substitute used for flavoring. It is thought that this chemical causes many negative consequences for the body, including poor absorption of essential vitamins.

Sports drinks such as Gatorade have to change their product in order to export to Japan or the EU, because of the use of a potassium bromate as a coloring agent.

Again, no country has outright banned milk – that would be ridiculous. This is more about the use of growth hormones in the production of American milk. Milk containing these hormones is connected with a risk of cancer, an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and an increase in the level of thyroid hormones.

That’s why hormone-aided milk is banned in Norway, Switzerland, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, and 29 other European countries.
