POPCON or POPCORN?? Up and coming local community
Just a day before, I went to support two friends organizing their first event. I wanted to share with the community here as the idea is pretty cool - as very much on community based to. Other than that I wanted to support my two friends who started it too.
The community platform they created is called POPCON, and it was their very first event. They were only expecting about 40 sign up or turn out, but guess what, it came up to about 170 sign-ups ! Of cos when the event is free, there are quite a lots of people just sign up and don't show up. Still a good turn out for first time event.
Registration in progress
Ok let's move on. The event was held and sponsored by Mindspace at Oasis Village Ara Damansara. Pretty cool space they have there. On this first event, they invited 2 speakers + a local musician.
- Andy Teh, Social Media Expert & Founder of Edamamedia
- Jared Lee, a YouTuber with 165K subscribers & Founder of TheGrimFilm
- Featured performer, Amrita Soon, a musician who released her first EP ‘Clues’ in December 2014
If u wanna know more of the speaker's profile, here u go, who knows u might wanna give them a shout out and support to our fellow Malaysians too :)

The event 'officially' launched by having Amrita to sing a song for all of us. After so, they shared with us what is POPCON and how it came about.
Summary for today's event : Focus on how to start or go about if u are thinking of becoming an influencer/vlogger/blogger etc..or even how to get ur online biz to the next level
WHAT I LEARNED FROM THE EVENT:
Social Media as we know it, is 'dominating' the world. According to the chart shown, there are nearly 75% of all Internet traffic in 2017 is video and predicted it's hiking more this year 2018.
Although FB still yields the highest user so far, it really depends which platform u wanted to target on. Like youtube is more on channel basis. Here are few differences highlighted FB and YTB when it comes to posting video.
FB | Youtube |
---|---|
Easier to view, as it they are on autoplay | You need to search for what u want to see |
Usually short and sweet | Longer video length |
Lighter content | Can have depth, like tutorial as such |
Full of noise (newsfeed) | More dedicated |
When you post a YTB on FB, usually do not create traffic at all. FB want u to post the video directly to them instead. (yeah i can relate to this, cos i tried few times, and seriously the view is close to none)
Whether you want to start a channel or fanclub or whatever, most importantly is CONSISTENCY. As an example, don't have too much mix topics or focus.
If you don't know what to start with, just try everything or just pick one or two to focus on to make a breakthrough
If you think language is a barrier, make some subtitles - problem solved
You can literally learn anything and everything on YouTube (totally agree!!)
Negative discouraging comments? Don't take it too personally lah. There is always haters. Why focus on them? Focus on make it better n keep going.
INTERMISSION:
During the intermission, they shared some You Tubers and I was laughing my heart out when a local comedian video was shown:

Towards the end of the event, they shared who are the up coming speakers for the next month but I forgot to take a photo.. haha. So if u are interested, just keep an eye on them out on POPCON FB page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/POPCONfest
And to end the night, Amrita performed for us again. Well done POPCON on the first event launch!
At the end i had some good chat with the speakers and not forgetting some Selfie with them and organizer.
POPCON? What's that about?
POPCON idea basically started by 4 YouTuber wannabes, who is lost, confused and don't know what to do and to starts. So they decided to start gathering people (literally anyone) to come together to learn together about the world of online media - mainly social media lah.
During the introduction, it is declared that every event is FREE.. only exchange is to either Like, Subscribe or someway support featured guest or channel. Pretty cool idea. Till next time, wishing them all the best !
Thanks for stopping by once again.
@originalworks
That sounds like a fun way to organically grow your social media interaction. And learn more about maintaining a sm presence.
@coldsteem Yeah it is. Like the fact also they are not just promoting and introducing the famous youtubers , as they also showcase our local youtubers who are building their channel. :)
It was a very good effort to bring yourtuber together and perform together for FREE in exchange for likes.
However, don't forget to share it here on this platform for every gig that you do.
Thank you for sharing.
Cheers.
Yeah it is. Sure. If i get to attend the gig will definitely post it up and keep u guys updated ! ;) @papanog

Great post, good share. It's so much fun to support friends when they are actually getting out and doing something! Also good to see how inspired everyone is on this platform now and the abilities it is giving us to be more active and a more well educated community. Thank you for sharing! Looks like you had fun and they did a great job!
Thanks @mental-extract. Yeah indeed. It's like when we give, we also receive. It's always nice to be connected with like-minded people who are willing to give each other support. Thanks for stopping by with the lovely comment ;)
