BANGER OF THE WEEK: The Diner's Out Handbook

A "diner out" is a fancy way of saying "guest". Except the elite don't have guests, but that's a different story. I love this book because it goes into the nitty-gritty of what high society expects in a person, such as the turns of phrase and methods of speaking that one ought to use in conversation and what kinds of plans to make.

A notable part of the book focuses on sample toasts, funny anecdotes and only minimally on the rules and strictures of manners that the tome expects the reader to be well-acquainted with. From romantic engagement to the rules of Wist and Bridge, little is left out in the copious tome of gentlemanly, but nonetheless cool, conduct.

Other parts that particularly stand out are the "indoor games" and "making ready" segments that go into being your best self and making sure others can project their best selves as well. And that's what etiquette is about, not being the guy who knows which fork to use - but to be the one that gets invited to all of the parties.
