We tend to infuse our ethical worldviews into our art.
I'm not sure why this isn't a bigger deal when we're talking about the garbage that is Disney Star Wars, the garbage that is post Jar Jar Star Trek, the garbage that is The Rings of Power, and the garbage that's bound to be the new Chronicals of Narnia videos; but, I'm gonna address this now.
Out of the aforementioned franchises, I'm best educated on Star Trek and The Chronicals of Narnia. Honestly, I was never a big Lord of the Rings fan. So far as I'm concerned, there are six Star Wars movies. I've read a couple of the books; but, I know plenty of people who know significantly more about Star Wars than I do.
Still, in a lot of ways, I could tolerate some stupid shit like having Scotty not knowing the basics of how a warp drive is supposed to work, or how the creators of The Rings of Power took a story that was supposed to take place over millenia and they're condensing it into...well... not that long.
What isn't forgivable is taking these IPs and reinventing them for "modern audiences" in regard to "messages" that they're sending.
Even if you see the ethical views of Tolkien, Lewis, and Roddenberry as being dated, or even wrong, they're legacy is in the art that they created, and they created that art with a certain set of moral values.
It's downright unethical to take these IPs and change the moral messages of those IPs to better fit what you think to be modern sensibilities.
Irreverence is the soul of comedy. Irreverence isn't a good way to honor a beloved IP.
You don't honor Gene Roddenberry by approaching a Star Trek movie or show with the thought, "I love Star Trek. But, it would have been better if I had done from the beginning." You don't honor Tolkien by making a Lord of the Rings story while thinking, "I love the world that Tolkien built. I just wanna approach it without infusing all of those catholic values."
Greta Gerwig is the worst video maker who I can imagine to make a new Narnia movie. CS Lewis was a born again Christian. The Narnia novels are all built around Biblical stories. If Lewis were alive today, he'd probably make JD Vance look like a liberal.
You may not like the views of any of these artists. That's fine. Just don't take what they worked so hard to create and steal it in order to proselytize your own moral values.
That's just gross and lazy. You're shitting on the thing that you claim to love. I mean...I know that some people are into that...I doubt CS Lewis was into that.
If you don't love the universes that Roddenberry, Tolkien, Lewis, and Lucas created along with the ethical messages that came with them, maybe you shouldn't be a contributor to the IP. Maybe you should put in the work, and create your own universe with your own ethical messages.
