Decentralise the metaverse?

in #ethereum7 years ago (edited)

I was recently asked if the metaverse should be decentralised, and if so why. My answer was yes and no. The metaverse is such a broad term. It means a virtual-reality space in which users can interact with a computer-generated environment and other users.’ according to Google. As it is not a simple yes or no answer, here are the pros and cons.

Pros:
Decentralisation means that there is no overbearing person or company that can do anything outside the platform rules. This means no server admins flying around while all other users are walking, no randomly banning people from the servers because they just plain don't like them.
Decentralisation also means that users can do whatever they want without any rules, apart from in-platform coded rules, to hold them down.

Cons:

Because there are no moderators however, users are able to do illegal things, black market deals and such, and without anyone able to stop them as they are completely anonymous. This also means that spam and trolling would be unstoppable.

There is a project called Decentraland which aims to decentralise the met averse. I am following the project and helping the devs with some things, including marketing efforts. Decentraland, when in its final stages, will be a fully user-run virtual world accessible with and without VR. As it will be fully user-run it will be totally decentralised, hence the name, and will display many if not all traits listed above.

If you are interested in decentralising the metaverse then I recommend you check out their slack and website.

I have to go build a tower now, see you in the metaverse.
