The village of Shirakawa-go is located on the island of Hounshu, Japan, which stretches among the mountains, the area where it often gets the heaviest snowfall in the world.
Therefore, locals develop their special type of building known as Gassho-zukuri, which is a house built with thick, triangular, steep-sounded straw that aims to bend / snow the heavy snow when the winter comes.
