In Japan, Thailand's premier league runner-up Muangthong United failed to deliver a surprise after being forced 3-0 up by J.League top-seeded Kashiwa Reysol at Hitachi Stadium.
A pair of goals from Cristiano da Silva and Junya Ito's action ensured victory for Reysol, in a farewell match between Teerasil Dangda and Theerathon Bunmathan with Muangthong before the two were officially in J.League this year.
Chiangrai United, who successfully knocked out Bali United in the previous round, was unable to advance to the group stage of the tournament after a 1-0 defeat at a visit to China's giant Shanghai SIPG headquarters.
Despite lowering the best squad, including Hulk and Oscars, Shanghai SIPG only scored a winning goal against the Thai club executed by Wu Hai early in the second half.
The biggest defeat among all the ASEAN teams that competed in this phase was obtained by Vietnamese representative FLC Thanh Hoa, who was beaten by South Korean top club Suwon Bluewings 5-1 at Suwon World Cup Stadium.
