This year's vacation, Szczecin Poland

in #esteem6 years ago

Summer is over us, and this time of the year, the discussion always turn to where to go, where to spend our vacation.

Where to go?

Trying to decide where to go, and what to do in our vacation this year, my family and I had a great debate..Should we do what we normally do, and do what is expected of us this year? Go to some vacation island, somewhere in the southern part of Europe, spend all of the time at the beach, or at the pool in some hotel...Well, no!! This time we actually decided to try something new🙂

There is a lot of places, even closer to where we live, that we haven't seen, or even had the slightest idea of ever going there...So, we made a choice..

Szczecin, Poland

We decided to take a bus trip to Poland, checking in at Radisson Blu in Szczecin.
I must admit that I have always had some prejudice against going to countries in the former eastern block..don't know why, but I expected that there would be basically nothing of interest...execpt for cheap prices, and the opportunity to live like a king for a short period of time...

Well, all my, prejudice was completely beaten down, once we arrived🙂

First of all, the city is full of old beautiful buildings, and it's very easy to sense all of the history, and all the things that has been going on through the years..

On top of that, it is one of the cleanest cities that I have ever seen, not even the most modern cities in western Europe come even close...They could even learn a thing or two, about keeping the streets clean, making it more attractive for tourists..

Some Information about history

The region where Szczecin is located, has always been an area of interest for some of the region's most powerful warlords, and nationality has changed quite some times..

In the 19th century, Szczecin was well know for its massive industry. Cars and various machines were produced here in very big numbers, but the biggest industry of the all was shipyards, the production of maritime vessels. Even today, the shipyards are still functioning, at least some of them.

It is very easy to see that this production was once very big, the harbour area is very big, and is still full of cranes, waiting for ships to come in.

The once busy harbour of Szczecin

It was very interesting to see, but still, it leaves you with some eerie feeling, that something isn't right.. We counted something like 70—80 cranes, but only two of them were actually operating...the rest were just standing there, reminding us of a once glorious time..
big cranes just standing there..

Transformation of the industry

Even though there is still a lot of industry in Szczecin, and the shipyards are still the biggest, the industry has changed..

After World War two, where around 70% of Szczecin was completely smashed by allied bombing, and ownership of the city changed hands a few times, the rebuilding of the city, and all the ways of making a living started changing...Less heavy industry, and more focus on tourism.

Tourism was a very well played card, and Szczecin is still upcoming, and still improving everyrhing..
With its fantastic surroundings, friendly people and its very cheap prices, this cound be a very popular place for tourists in the future. Casinos, malls and all kinds of tourist attractions are still being built.

I can only recommend for you to pay Szczecin a visit, and I have a feeling that yoy have to do it soon, if you want to experience of living like a king for a short period of time..most regular western European people are acutally able to do precisely that...At least for now..guess the prices will increase as more and more people realize this place is worth visiting🙂

Hope you enjoyed🙂

Over the long course of its history Szczecin has been a place of birth and of residence for many famous individuals, including Empress Catherine the Great, composer Carl Loewe, writer Alfred Döblin, and many others.

Szczecin's architectural style is due to trends popular in the last half of the 19th century and the first years of the 20th century: Academic art and Art Nouveau. In many areas built after 1945, especially in the city centre, which had been destroyed due to Allied bombing, social realism is prevalent.

The city has an abundance of green areas: parks and avenues – wide streets with trees planted in the island separating opposing traffic (where often tram tracks are laid); and roundabouts. Szczecin's city plan resembles that of Paris
