Racun yang Bersembunyi di Balik Kata "Obat"
"Ular mati bisa merokok?" adalah teka-teki klasik yang sering ditemui, terutama bagi kalangan anak 90-an. Hampir tidak ada yang tidak tahu jawaban dari teka-teki itu. Ya, apalagi kalau bukan obat nyamuk bakar.
Ngomong-ngomong tentang obat nyamuk, pernahkah kita menyadari kalau sebenarnya kata itu terdengar sedikit rancu, khususnya jika dikaitkan dengan fungsinya. Kita tahu persis bahwa kata "obat" seyogyanya bermakna penyembuh bukan malah sebaliknya, membunuh.
Apa motiv dinamakan "obat nyamuk" apakah karena tidak adanya padanan kata dalam Bahasa Indonesia yang sesuai atau malah karena matinya nyamuk adalah obat bagi manusia??
Entahlah, apapun alasannya, barangkali ada hikmah di balik obat dengan fungsi racun itu. Ha ha
