Wednesday Walk: Cooking competitions at the temple festival, เดินดูการแข่งขันทำอาหารที่งานวัด

This is my entry for #wednesdaywalk created by @tattoodjay. My visit to Wat Prayurawongsawas or Wat Prayoon was an incredible experience; I haven’t had such a good time at a Buddhist temple festival for ages.

The atmosphere was so easy going with lots of fun and light hearted joy. There were so many things to see, eat and play (simple games like throwing tennis balls and darts at bottles or balloons). Then, I ran into cooking competitions which consisted of two categories: professional cooks and amateur cooks. The first section of competition was full students from several cooking colleges in the area. These students were in proper uniforms and terribly serious in competing! They got very difficult and demanding menu to be completed in very limited time. I walked around the garden observing that they were all under pressure to finish their dishes. I did not see any smiling faces around the garden. Some teachers were quietly observing their students, making them more nervous and pressurised!

These cooking students were in a special garden full of Bonsai and rare old trees. The surrounding was very nice and green but they did not have the time to enjoy a leisurely walk like I did.

I did enjoy watching the other less serious cooking competition in the temple court. Visitors could enter into this light hearted competition, I saw two young boys decided to join this event! Some participants came in proper chef outfit; some came in their own team’s colour.

These participants were competing on how to make the best tasting green curry with chicken. They were given the same ingredients and cooking utensils. The judges or referees gathered all the participants to tell them about the rules and marking criteria. There were altogether ten teams competing for the top prize. Their friends and families sat on the chairs opposite the cooking arena. I was so lucky that they allowed me to take their photos freely.

These were the ingredients for making green curry. Actually, we could get ready made green curry paste in sealed plastic sachet. I did give @daabi2006 and @gamer00 two green curry paste sachets and two Tom-yum paste as a souvenir from Thailand as they returned home after SteemFest4. I do wonder if Leo has usef them all up, or whether the experiments were successful.

งานวัดประยุรวงศาวาสปีนี้สนุกกว่าปีที่แล้วมาก เราคิดว่าเป็นงานฉลองครบรอบของวัดที่ดีที่สุดเท่าที่เราเคยไปมา รอกจากมีอาหารหลากหลาย มีเกมส์ให้เล่นในราคาถูกมาก มีงานศิลป์ให้ดูหลายอย่าง ยังมีกิจกรรมแข่งทำอาหารด้วย โดยแบ่งเป็นสองประเภท คือการแข่งระดับมืออาชีพ กับการแข่งอบบสมัครเล่นโดยแระชาชนทั่วไป พวกมืออาชีพจะเป็นนักเรียนจากสถาบันการศึกษาที่อยู่ไม่ไกลจากวัด พวกนักเรียนที่มาแข่งขันแต่งตัวในชุดทำครัวมืออาชีพ มีเครื่องแบบและตราสัญลักษณ์ด้วย พวกเขาได้โจทย์มี่ท้าทายมาก ให้ทำอาหารฝรั่งในเวบาที่จำกัด ทำให้ทุกคนเคร่งขรึมมาก แม้ว่าสถานที่แข่งขันอยู่ในสวนที่เขียวร่มรื่น พวกเขาไม่มีเวลาเดินเล่นชมสวนเลย

เราชอบการแข่งขันทำอาหารโดยประขาขนทั่วไป เพราะว่าเป็นการแข่งขันเพื่อความสนุกสนาน คนที่มาเที่ยวงานสามารถสมัครแข่งทำอาหารได้ทันที เราเห็นบางคนเตรียมมาแข่งเป็นทีมโดยใส่เสื้อสีเดียวกัน มีเด็กหนุ่มเพื่อนกันสมัครแข่งด้วย บางคนแต่งตัวด้วยเครื่องแบบของเชฟ โจทย์ที่ได้คือ การทำแกงเขียวหวานไก่ ทุกทีมได้ส่วนประกอบอาหารเหมือนกัน รวมทั้งเครื่องมือในครัวเหมือนกันด้วย เราแอบไปถ่ายรูปบรรดากรรมการเรียกผู้สมัครไปรับทราบกฎในการแข่งขัน และการให้คะแนนในแต่ละด้าน เราดูแล้วนึกสนุกมาก ถ้ามีเพื่อนทำอาหารเป็นเราก็คงอยากเป็นผู้ช่วย บรรดาเพื่อนและญาติพี่น้องของผู้แข่งขันต่างก็นั่งและยืนอยู่ตรงข้ามเวทีการแข่งขัน ทุกคนมาเชียร์ตัวแทนของจนอย่างคึกคัก ทำให้บรรยากาศสนุกสนานและตื่นเต้นมาก

By the time the competition finished, it became too dark for my iPhone to take photos. I heard the announcement about the winners and inviting people to taste the green curry. There were lots more people arriving at the temple so the atmosphere became quite electric and more exciting.
