Street photography: Tuk-Tuk ride along streets in Nongkhai, นั่งตุ๊กตุ๊กไปตามถนนที่หนองคาย

This is another streetphotography contest by thaiphotocontest30. I have just arrived in Nongkhai yesterday. To my surprise, the weather was cold and I didn’t bring any winter jacket with me.

Sitting in a tuk-tuk which was going very fast, I felt the cold wind was about to freeze me up. It was like sharp needles jabbing at my skin so I had to dig for a big scarf to protect myself. But the air was very fresh, light and clean. My lungs felt very happy and liberated from the air pollution in Bangkok. Most of the roads were still quite empty as it was around 7.30 am, people here did not have to get up early like Bangkokians. It would take about ten minutes to get to work within the town during normal traffic.

This is the old road called ‘Meechai’ road meaning Victory road.

This road had been widen as on the right side is the main police station and the opposite side is the Nongkhai hospital where many tuk-tuks waiting for passengers from the hospital. This section of the road is always very busy and there are many streetfood stalls along the footpath.

This is the old Governor’s House which is next to the provincial hospital. I happened to see my old friend’s tuk-tuk racing against mine! I really needed his winter hat and jacket! I was afraid to a catch a cold later on.

เราพึ่งเดินทางมาถึงหนองคายเมื่อวานนี้ แปลกใจมากว่าอากาศหนาวกว่าที่คาดไว้ เราไม่ได้เอาเสื้อกันหนาวมาเลย เวลานั่งรถตุ๊กตุ๊กแล่นไปตามถนนจากสถานีรถไฟ ลมเย็นๆมากระทบทำให้เย็นสะท้าน แต่อากาศสดชื่น เบาและสะอาด ทำให้ปอดรู้สึกดีมากหายใจสะดวก ถนนก็ไม่ค่อยมีรถยนต์ เพราะยังเช้ามากสำหรับคนที่นี่ เขาไม่ต้องรีบตื่นไปทำงาน การเดินทางไปที่ทำงานในเมืองใช้เวลาประมาณ สิบนาทีในการจราจรปกติ คนขับของเราเร่งเครื่องเร็วมากเหมือนกำลังหิวข้าวเช้า เราไปตามถนนสายเก่าคือ ถนนมีชัย ซึ่งวิ่งผ่านสถานีตำรวจ และโรงพยาบาลประจำจังหวัดหนองคาย ที่หน้าโรงพยาบาลจะมีรถตุ๊กตุ๊กมาคอยรับผู้โดยสารตลอดทั้งวัน ช่วงนี้ของถนนจะมีคนไปมามากตลอด ข้างถนนจะมีแผงขายอาหารหลากหลาย ห่างไปอีกร้อยเมตรก็เป็นจวนผู้ว่าเก่าที่ไม่ได้ใช้แล้ว ถนนมีชัยเป็นถนนที่ยาวมาก ที่ทอดจากเหนือไปทางใต้ของเมือง

The old part of town still has several old houses and buildings but most old buildings has been transformed into townhouses. Luckily, the old temples could still be seen dotted along the old road but these temples had not been correctly renovated line those in Chiengmai. The drive towards tourism had meant that the waterfront road has been modernised by cutting down all the old trees down to give a better view of the river. The concrete walkway would become extremely hot during the day, without any old trees.

ในส่วนของเมืองเก่ายังพอมีตึกและบ้านเก่าๆให้เห็นบ้าง แต่ส่วนใหญ่บ้านเก่าได้โดนเปลี่ยนสภาพเป็นตึกแถว และบ้านปูนกันเกือบหมดแล้ว โชคดีที่วัดเก่าแก่ยังคงอยู่ให้เห็นตามริมถนน แต่การบูรณะวัดมักเป็นการทำโดยไม่มีความรู้ด้านสถาปัตยกรรมและประวัติศาสตร์ มาตราฐานการบูรณะซ่อมแซมเทียบเท่า วัดเก่าแก่ที่เชียงใหม่ไม่ได้เลย กลายเป็นได้วัดใหม่บนที่ตั้งของวัดเก่า ความเจริญด้านการท่องเที่ยวทำให้ต้นไม้กว่าร้อยต้นถูกตัดตลอดถนนริมแม่น้ำ เพื่อสร้างทางเดินที่กว้างใหญ่มีเสาไฟสวยๆแพงๆ ประดับตลอดริมแม่น้ำ ทางเดินที่มีแต่ปูนจะร้อนมากจนไม่มีคนไปเดินตอนกลางวัน เพราะไม่มีต้นไม้เลยแม้แต่ต้นเดียว การลงทุนสร้างทางเดินใหม่ที่อลังการเพื่อการท่องเที่ยวนี้ ถ้ามีการประเมินก็ต้องบอกว่าไม่คุ้มการลงทุน และเป็นการใช้งบอย่างไม่มีความสมดุลย์ ในขณะที่ถนนหลักจากสถานีรถไฟยังรกเป็นป่า ไม่มีแสงไฟส่องสว่างในเวลากลางคืน ถนนในเมืองที่ไมใช่แหล่งการค้าก็แทบจะมืดสนิท ประชาชนธรรมดาขี่มอเตอร์ไซด์ก็ต้องระวังกันเอง คนเดินถนนก็ควรจะมีไฟฉายติดตัวในเวลาคํ่าด้วย
