Market Friday: making merit during New Year holiday, ทำบุญช่วงปีใหม่

This is my entry for #marketfriday hosted by the compassionate and very kind @dswigle. During these few weeks in the latter half of last December and in January before the Chinese New Year,I have to try to visit all my favourite temples to pay respect to the Buddha and make merit. Many astrologers have been warning people of a very volatile year with drastic sudden changes later, so we have better gather some good karma as our shields against the coming storms.

So, I visited Wat Indravoraviharn or Intharawiharn (called Wat Indra for short). This Buddhist temple was built during Ayutthaya period and was originally called Wat Bangkhunprom. Around that area lived a community of Laotian refugees who had been brought in from Vientiane after defeating the Laos troops during the reign of King Taksin. One of the Royal entourage has become a consort of King Rama I, so when her uncle did a major renovation to this old temple, locals started calling it Wat Indra to honor Chao Indra. Later, King Rama VI gave a new formal name to this temple: Wat Intharawiharn or Indraviharn.

This temple became famous when a new abbot called Luang Por Toh, (which means Venerable Father Big in Thai), started building this 32 meter high Buddha called Phra Phutta-Sriariyamethriya. Luang Por Toh began the construction of the big statue in 1853 but it was stopped after his death. It was not until the Reign of King RamaVII that the construction was resumed in 1924 and completed in 1928. There were three days celebrations in March 4-6, 1929; these dates become yearly temple festival from then on.

The Ceylonese Government gifted the temple with Buddha relics from their monastery; these sacred Buddha relics were put inside the highest spot of the Buddha statue, inside the hair compartment. So, this temple has another source of powerful vibes which we could tap into while meditating inside the holy fountain and meditation room.

The entrance to the holy fountain room which has a wax model of Luang Por Toh and a small fountain of holy water which local Buddhists could take home in small bottles. There are always some people meditating in this circular room; the energy there would help meditators to become quiet and still very fast. At the base of the fountain and around the area are full of sacred scripture and prayers to give powerful vibes to the fountain. That’s probably why lots of people use the holy to sprinkle around themselves and their houses whenever they fell ill or thought they had bad luck!

I was quite lucky that day as the temple has just borrowed sacred Buddha relics from Sri Lanka and also installed an exhibition of ancient Buddhist scriptures (Tipitaka) from several countries. Many Buddhists took the opportunity to pay respect to the sacred Buddha relics which would be in the exhibition area until January 15, 2020. That’s probably why I felt very calm and peaceful at the temple; and I spent more time there than usual.

At first I was put off by all the new buildings and too much commercialisation of Buddhist amulets. This really upset me as they seemed to try to make money out of faith, and the ongoing loudspeaker kept telling people to donate money for good fortune, wealth and success. That really spoiled the quiet atmosphere of the temple and was rather anti-Buddhist teaching. I even walked up to the old man to ask him to stop talking and have a rest. The three old men there looked at me and one told me that it’s their duty. Sadly, they did not get my message but there was peace and quiet for a while. They were quite pleased that I made a big donation. They did not understand Buddhism and did things out of habits as rituals.

Most Buddhist temples are trapped in their own making, as most abbots were taught to aim for materialistic progress. These new buildings need lots of money for energy costs and maintenance. To be progressive, the abbots have to give free education and lodging to young novices which require more money. Furthermore, there is a competition among these abbots as who would have more new buildings and bigger number of novices! So, they have to resort to making and selling amulets including performing strange ceremonies for gullible Buddhists who never read any Buddhist texts. This is a crazy situation which would destroy the whole hierarchical structure in the end.

But this has been already written in Buddhist text: the Lord Buddha told his disciples that Buddhism would last only 5,000 years, then the whole world would go through a cleansing reset. Thousands of years would pass before a new ‘human’ race came into being and the fifth or last Buddha would be born to lead everyone into enlightenment. So, I guess that total nuclear war or some major meteorite impact would be a long way away! But many people would be reincarnated again and again to witness the last chapter of an era.

ช่วงก่อนปีใหม่เราไปไหว้พระตามวัดที่เราเคยชอบไปในอดีต เราแวะไปวัดอินทรวิหาร เพราะเป็นวัดเก่าแก่ที่คุณแม่เคยพาเราไปตอนเด็กๆ แต่ทุกอย่างเปลี่ยนไปมาก จากวัดที่โล่งๆ ดูสะอาดตากลายเป็นวัดที่แออัดไปด้วยตึก ดูไม่เป็นระเบียบและไม่สะอาดเลย เราก็ไปไหว้หลวงพ่อโต พระพุทธรูปสูงขนาด 32 เมตร สร้างโดยหลวงพ่อโตในปี 2410 ในสมัยรัชกาลที่4 แต่มาสำเร็จในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 7 ในปี 2467 และในปี 2523 ทางรัฐบาลศรีลังกาได้มอบ พระบรมสารีริกธาตุมาให้ ซึ่งทางวัดได้ทำการบรรจุไว้บนยอดเกศของพระพุทธอารียเมตไตรย ฉะนั้นที่วัดนี้จึงมีสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์หลายที่ และยังมีบ่อน้ำมนต์ของหลวงพ่อโต พรหมรังสีด้วย

ตอนนี้เป็นโอกาสดีที่จะไปไหว้พระที่วัดนี้ เพราะทางวัดได้อัญเชิญพระบรมสารีริกธาตุจากศรีลังกา และมีการแสดงพระไตรปิฎกโบราณจากหลายประเทศด้วย การแสดงนิทรรศการนี้จะมีไปจนถึง วันที่ 15 มกราคม 2563. เราเห็นชาวพุทธทั้งไทยและ ต่างชาติมาแสดงความเคารพและบูชากันหลายคน วันนั้นบรรยากาศในวัดเงียบสงบ ยกเว้นเสียวที่มาตามลำโพง พรํ่าบอกให้คนไปบริจาคเงินทำบุญ เพื่อจะได้มีความมั่งคั่ง โชคดี และมีความสำเร็จในปีใหม่ เขาพูดไม่หยุดเลยและเหมือนไม่หยุดกายใจด้วย เราก็ไปบอกให้เขาพักเหนื่อย และดื่มน้ำบ้าง เขาเล่นพูดไม่หยุดเกือบชั่วโมง ชายสูงอายุสามคนมองมาทางเราด้วยความแปลกใจ เราก็บอกว่าคนมาไหว้พระอยากสวดมนต์เงียบๆบ้าง และขอให้เขาลดเสียงลงด้วย ซึ่งเขาก็ทำให้ เราก็ทำบุญบูรณะหลวงพ่อโตไปพอสมควร จากนั้นเราก็ไปที่บ่อน้ำมนต์ และไปกราบพระประธานในอุโบสถ เราอยู่นานกว่าที่ตั้งใจ เพราะมีความสบายใจอย่างประหลาด เทวดาและสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่นั่นมีความเมตตาสูงมาก เราก็ต้องทำใจในเรื่องที่วัดไม่เหมือนสมัยหลวงพ่อโตแล้ว กลายเป็นพุทธพาณิชย์กันไปหมดแล้ว สงสัยว่าพุทธทำนายคงเป็นจริง พุทธศาสนาจะดำรงอยู่ได้เพียง5,000ปี และทุกอย่างก็จะสูญสลายไปหมด เราคงต้องปฎิบัติธรรมให้สม่ำเสมอได้แล้ว

ตอนเย็นมีพระมาสวดมนต์เสียงดังกังวาล แต่เราไม่มีเวลานั่งต่อแล้ว นี่เราอยู่ที่วัดนานกว่าที่ตั้งใจไว้ ซึ่งก็แปลกดีและแสดงว่าที่นี่ยังมีพลังดีๆที่ร่างกายและจิตใต้สำนึกของเราต้องการ เราจึงถ่วงเวลาจนพระอาทิตย์ตก เราจึงยอมกลับบ้าน อดเสียดายไม่ได้ที่ภูมิทัศน์ของวัดอินทร์ไม่เหมือนสมัยก่อนอีกแล้ว
