Market Friday: A coffee shop with curiosity objects,

in #esteem5 years ago

This is my late entry for #marketfriday hosted by the lovely and kind @dswigle. This week has been hectic with lots of work done in the garden and the worrying concern of one cat, Rosy, missing for four days now. I hope she would be able to find her way back home.

This ‘coffee and gallery’ is right by the river front in Nongkhai, where the Indochina market is located. This market is the first market where vendors sell all kinds of local products and imported goods from China.

The other name for this market is ‘Talad-Tha-Sadet’ which means the market where the King got off the boat. In 1955, there was a big flood which caused tremendous damage to the whole town. So, King Bhumibol (King Rama 9th) and his Queen traveled from Bangkok to give moral support the local folks. At that time, or some sixty years ago it was very cumbersome to travel to distant provinces. Motor ways and concrete roads were hard to find out side Bangkok. So, they had to travel by boats along the Mae Nam Khong River from a nearby province. The royal boat stopped at the local pier which has become known as Tha-Sadet! This coffee shop is very closed to this old pier that is why it is called ‘coffee shop at the pier in Thai’. But the original pier has been moved a bit further up the river as more boat traffic crossing to and from Laos demanded more administration space.

The lady owner of this coffee shop is very keen on collecting antique objects to preserve the local history and document the past. This shop is also selling local products such as local herbal balms, honey, hand woven clothes, silver jewelry and fruit wine.

The shop has been given many old photos and objects from local people who like her idea of a small historical gallery and folk museum. Customers could enjoy the sunset while having cold drinks or coffee and taking selfies after a hard day window shopping.

Keep dry and warm!

What an interesting name for a market! I like the story that went with it and the history as well. To think how far the country of time they're just come in just sixty years. The progress has been amazing!

I like little coffee places that collect certain things and make it part of their decoration. It is very much like a little historical gallery and how fortunate for her that many of the local people gave her some old photos to put into it! Thank you so much for taking us there and sharing the story of this unique little coffee shop! I appreciate you posting into the market Friday Challenge and I wish you a very nice day!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Thank you very much for your encouragement and generosity! We are so lucky to have a big supporter along our journey in this platform.

Do glad you enjoy the little snippet of local history of a small border town. Yes! I take for granted that much progress has been achieved in under sixty years. From local dirt roads to wide motor way and concrete roads around the town!

This little coffee shop helps to remind younger generations of time past and forgotten memories.

Thank you spreading the love around!
Best.

howdy sir kaminchan! What a unique and wonderful coffe shop, I love that place! lol. Very interesting and educational, I love what the owner is doing there. I've never seen such ornate lamp poles as in that third photo, wow!

Thank you for your very nice comment! Thai people are very good at artistic creation! That is supposed
to be Naga representation. But they never see this mysterious and legendary creature.
