Boxing and games at temple fair in Bangkok, ไปดูต่อยมวยและเกมส์ที่งานวัด

This is my entry for #wednesdaywalk hosted by @tattoodjay. Life has been incredibly hectic and there’s so much reading to catch up with. The network connection seems to go down the whole day so I could not post or upvote for a while. So, I’d like to share something I never expect to see in a temple fair in Bangkok. That’s boxing match among small children. The annual temple fair at Wat Prayoon or Wat Prayurawongsawas has become my favourite venue for having a good time looking at craft shops, tasting food plus traditional Thai desserts and making merits or paying respects to old Buddha statues in temple halls.

But as I walked further towards the back of the temple ground, I could hear loud cheering noises. I went along the path to investigate a big crowd getting so excited with cheering and laughter. Lo and behold! Small boys were having a boxing match inside a proper boxing ring!

Contrasting with the elegant Pagoda or Chedi, these people were having a great time watching a blindfolded boxing match.

At first I was horrified by such a violent competition among small boys. But, this was perfectly harmless and a very funny match. The small boxers had supervisors who would jump in to make sure nobody get punched or injured. The boys had to be blindfolded so the only way to locate the opponent was to listen to the sounds on the ground. Special dried palm leaves (the special kind we used for roofs in the past) were placed on the ground. These were very slippery and made lots of noises when stepping on them.

These kids kept slipping on to the ground, their supervisors kept picking them up; so they got quite exhausted trying to find each other. When they found each other, instead of boxing, they decided to push the other down to the ground. Spectators, parents and families of these small boxers kept shouting the directions which the boys should move, causing more confusion and frustration for the boys!

The boxing match was freely opened to any boy who could find another friend to join the match. The commentator was very good at his task and did exactly like in professional boxing matches with typical traditional Thai boxing music in the background. So, the whole atmosphere was quite electric and full of anticipation. The small boxers found out that they got more marks by making the other sitting on the ground, so a pushing match replaced the boxing match! Getting up from slippery palm leaves was very difficult and exhausting. Finally the red shorts got so exhausted by falling down and getting up that he surrendered to the blue shorts!

There were other boys waiting in the wing for their chance to become famous for the day! This was a very good experience for small boys to cross over into manhood. In the past, a few hundred years ago, temples were places for young boys to learn boxing and self-defense art including learning to read and write. The role of Buddhist temples in Thai history could never be over estimated; they were like mini-colleges. There were other usual games to be found at the temple fair too.

งานประจำปีที่วัดประยุรวงศาวาสนั้น มีการละเล่นและเกมส์ให้คนมาเที่ยวงานวัดได้เล่นอย่างสนุกสนาน แต่ที่น่าแปลกใจมากที่สุดสำหรับเรา คือการต่อยมวยรุ่นเด็ก เราไม่คิดว่าจะเจอการต่อยมวยแบบโบราณที่วัดนี้ เราเดินเล่นไปรอบวัดจนไปเจอคนส่งเสียงเชียร์กันดังมาก เราจึงเดินเจ้าไปดู ก็เจอเวทีต่อยมวยและคนดูกำลังสนุกกับการเชียร์มวย เราพึ่งเคยเห็นการต่อยมวยโดยมีการปิดตาคู่ต่อสู้ทั้งสองข้าง แล้วปล่อยให้เดินหาคู่ชกมวยกันเอง เขาเอาใบจากแห้งๆมาปูพื้น เวลาเดินจะมีเสียงดังเหมือนย่ำไปบนกองใบไม้แห้ง ทำให้รู้ว่ามีคนเดินมาทางไหน นักมวยก็ต้องปรี่เข้าไปชกคู่ต่อสู้

แต่งานนี้นักมวยต้องลื่นล้มบนกองใบจากหลายครั้งจนเหนื่อย พี่เลี้ยงต้องมาช่วยพยุงขึ้นหลายครั้ง คนดูก็พากันตะโกนบอกทิศทาง ก็ยิ่งทำให้เด็กๆสับสนมาก ไม่รู้ว่าจะไปทิศไหนกันแน่ พอเจอคู่ต่อสู้ก็ไม่มีแรงชกกัน กลายเป็นผลักฝ่ายตรงข้ามให้ล้มลงกับพื้นแทน พอรู้ว่าตนได้คะแนนเพิ่มจากการทำให้คู่ต่อสู้ลงไปนั่งที่พื้น ก็กลายเป็นมวยผลักแทน คนที่ยอมแพ้ก็คือคนที่เหนื่อยมากกับการลุกขึ้นจากกองใบจากนั่นเอง งานนี้มีเด็กพยายามหาคู่ชก เพื่อขึ้นไปลองชกมวยปิดตาหลายคู่ บรรดาครอบครัวก็เป็นกองเชึยร์กันเสียงดัง ต่างคนก็ถ่ายรูปเป็นที่ระลึกและสนุกกับความตลกขบขันของการชกมวยแบบเด็กๆ นอกจากนี้ก็มีเกมส์ปาลูกโป่ง และยิงกระป๋องเพื่อเอารางวัลเป็นตุ๊กตา เกมส์ละสิบบาท เด็กๆแห่มาเล่นกันตรึม เราเห็นยังอยากเล่นด้วย แต่อายเด็กเพราะเราปาลูกดอกไม่แม่นเหมือนสมัยก่อน

This game is throwing darts at balloons. The rewards for punching the balloons are different sizes of dolls. This game is always very popular with children.

There was also another game of throwing tennis balls at empty cans. But I couldn’t find my photos. I think my Steemian friends @gamer00 and @daabi2006 would enjoy these two games as they were pretty good at shooting air-guns when I bought them to a temple fair last November. Those were the good old days!
