Beautiful Sunday: the best temple fair by the river,งานวัดที่สนุกที่สุดเท่าที่เคยไปมา

This is my entry for #beautifulsunday hosted by @ace108. Last Sunday I took a boat ride along the Chao Phraya River and got off at Memorial Bridge. I was heading across the river towards an old temple on the other side. This temple: Wat Prayurawongsawas was having its 192nd year anniversary celebration. This event turned out to be the best temple fair that I have ever experienced in years. I could not believe that local monks did manage and organise such a wonderful temple fair. Several days later and a bit of investigation, I found out that these were not the usual homely or old fashion monks as they happened to be the cream de la cream of administrative level of the Buddhist Monks’ university in Thailand.

I enjoyed myself so much that I stayed until very late and I almost missed my boat.

As soon as I descended from the bridge. The temple fair started with colourful decorations and rows of yummy street food ranging from very cheap to affordable seafood! The traffic on the road almost grinned to a halt as drivers kept looking at these delicious food. Pedestrians had a hard time making decisions on what to buy for their dinner.

Even some chefs who were in cooking competition later on in the temple fair could not resist some delicious street food!

I had to make an effort to walk as quickly a possible to get to the temple; I was very tempted to have some street food along the way. But I knew there should be fantastic choices of food stalls and lots of children’s games there. To my surprise, I caught a group of good looking chefs eating a traditional and simple Thai dessert at the entrance of the temple. I found out later that these were top chefs and instructors at a nearby college who acted as referees for cooking competition in the evening.

I did follow their good example and had a bowl of Lod-Chong, a traditional dessert taken with coconut milk and crushed ice on top of small pieces of steamed rice flour mixed with pandan juice. A portion cost 20 Baht or less than 10 cents!

I could see that this was a good start to my outing at Wat Prayoon (a shorter name for this temple). However, my priority was not food, but the visit to the museum and white Pagoda (Phra Chedi). I am always fond of antiques and old Buddha statues as they could give me wonderful energy. Besides, being a vegetarian most of the time meant that I could not indulge in many delicious street food. However, I like to observe their cooking techniques as I really need to learn to cook properly. So, this post will be about the food aspect of the temple fair. This temple fair was packed full of activities such as competitions, dancing and musical entertainment, games and toys for children; beautiful Buddha statues and wall murals in the main hall should not be missed including a climb up to the inner sanctum of the white Phra Chedi.

I kept walking around these good stalls a few times admiring how they could such good cooks. There were more than a hundred stalls around the temple ground, cheaper stalls were tucked away in various corners. What impressed me about this fair was that they had free food stalls for people who could not spend money on food. So, poorer families could still enjoy all the free activities with free delicious food. The other impressive thing was the positioning of many dustbins around the temple with volunteers manning them. There were different dustbins for paper, plastic, recycle materials and general dustbins. So,despite hundreds of visitors, the whole place looked very clean. Sometimes I wished I weren’t a routine vegetarians! Some food stalls were from famous restaurants and there were long queues. Some cooks were showing off their culinary skills. I watched in amazement and envy,wondering when I would stop overcooking my food.

วันอาทิตย์ก่อนเราไปเที่ยวงานวัดที่สนุกที่สุดในรอบยี่สิบปี เรานั่งเรือไปลงที่ท่าสะพานพุทธ แล้วเดินข้ามสะพานฝั่งตรงข้าม พอเดินลงสะพานมา ก็เจอบรรยากาศงานวัดทันที เขาจัดงานดี และวางแผนเก่งมาก ทุกอย่างดูดีและมีความเป็นระเบียบมาก ร้านอาหารที่มาออกงานก็มีความหลากหลาย มีตั้งแต่ราคา 15บาท อย่างต่ำจนถึง50บาท เราต้องอดใจอย่างมากที่จะไม่หยุดซื้อของกินตามทาง เรารีบเดินให้ถึงประตูวัด พอดีไปเจอกลุ่มเชฟที่ดูมืออาชีพกำลังกินลอดช่องที่ขายเพียง20บาท เขาตักให้เต็มชาม ใส่น้ำแข็งเกล็ดมีรสชาดกำลังอร่อย เราก็หยุดกินด้วย พอเข้าไปในวัดก็้เจอร้านอาหารมีชื่อหลายสิบร้าน และซุ้มอาหารมากกว่าร้อย ถ้าเราไม่ได้เป็นมังสวิรัติเราคงกินจนพุงแตกแน่นอน

เราเดินสำรวจซุ้มอาหารสามรอบ ร้านที่ขายราคาถูก20บาท จะอยู่ด้านในของวัด ร้านดังๆจะมาอยู่ตรงกลางลานวัด เขาจัดการเรื่องความสะอาดดีมาก มีถังขยะหลายแบบตามจุดต่างๆ พร้อมมีคนยืนคอยกำกับ ให้คนทิ้งขยะให้ตรงตามวัสดุรีไซเคิลหลายชนิด แล้วยังมีคนคอยตามเก็บขยะและกวาดพื้นตลอดเวลา มีพนักงานกทม.มาช่วยงานหลายสิบคน แต่ที่ประทับใจที่สุดคือ มีบริการให้อาหารกินฟรีด้วย ทำให้คนที่ไม่คอยมีกำลังซื้อ แต่อยากมาเที่ยวหาความสนุกที่งานวัด ได้กินอาหารอร่อยพร้อมทั้งชมการแสดงหลายอย่างบนเวทีในงาน เราเห็นชาวบ้านรุ่นก่อนใส่ผ้าถุงมาเที่ยวงานหลายคน ทุกคนมีความรื่นเริงและหาความสุขกันได้ตามกิจกรรมต่างๆ ตั้งแต่การดูรำและการแสดง การแข่งขันทำอาหาร และดูการละเล่นแบบโบราณด้วย เราสนุกจนเกือบพลาดเรือด่วนกลับไปที่ท่านํ้าสะพานตากสิน เราอยากให้ทุกวัดจัดงานได้แบบนี้ คนไม่มีตังมากก็มาเดินเที่ยวงานวัดได้อย่างสบายใจ
