Beautiful Sunday: local rowing members launching their boat on the river, ทีมแข่งเรือเอาเรือลงแม่น้ำ

This is my entry for #beautifulsunday hosted by @ace108. During the weekend, those youngsters belonging to their village rowing team would meet up in the evening by the river for their rowing practice.

The rowing boat is very heavy as it’s made from iron. These youngsters have to work as a team to bring this very heavy boat to the river bank. The whole process took almost twenty minutes as the way down the slope to the river is very slippery and sharply angled. I am very impressed by their coordination and carefulness. This task seems to depend on a lot of good luck as the weight of the boat presses on with gravity which, at one point, it looks as if the boat is going to slip from their grips!

This is probably the only village in Nongkhai where the rowing team consists on local villagers. These rowers have to start their rowing practice before the annual competition after the rainy season. All villages will converge on the river banks to cheer their local teams.

Sometimes there would be up to twenty long boats in the race. The racing boats are traditionally built with hard wood and could carry up to thirty rowers. I had watched the annual boat race several years ago when I first came to Nongkhai. The race was very exciting and tantalizing as the rowers were extremely serious about winning the race.

Many villagers would come out to observe their friends launching the boat and to give them encouragement. Lately, other villages have started hiring strong men such as local soldiers and Laotian workers to row their boats. So, they could win the boat race and get the prize money plus the trophies.

Boat races among villages have been used as a means to create social cohesion and unity; young teenagers would learn the importance of working as a team, of discipline and responsibility. But more teenagers could not put up with the demand of routine practice and physical endurance. So, I am very delighted to see many young teenagers still volunteer to become rowers.

ช่วงนี้เด็กหนุ่มหรือวัยรุ่นที่เป็นฝีพายเรือประจำหมู่บ้าน เริ่มมานัดซ้อมพายเรือกันแล้ว เพราะหลังออกพรรษาจะมีการแข่งขันพายเรือประจำปีระหว่างหมู่บ้านใกล้เคียง และจะมีทีมที่เก่งๆจากจังหวัดใกล้เคียงมาท้าแข่งด้วย หมู่บ้านนี้ยังคงเป็นหมู่บ้านเดียวที่ใช้ชายหนุ่มในหมู่บ้านมาแข่งเรือ ส่วนหมู่บ้านอื่นๆตอนนี้ ก็มีการจ้างผู้ชายที่แข็งแรงมาเป็นฝีพาย เช่น ไปจ้างทหารหนุ่ม หรือคนงานชาวลาวที่มีกำลังดี มาเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของทีม ทำให้ในช่วงหลายปีที่ผ่านมา ทีมของที่หมู่บ้านไม่ได้รางวัลที่1 อีกเลย อย่างเก่งก็ได้ที่3 เพราะหนุ่มวัยรุ่นมีแรงสู้พวกผู้ใหญ่ตัวโตที่ฝึกทหาร และชาวลาวที่ทำงานใช้กำลังทุกวันไม่ได้ เราก็คิดว่าน่าจะมีการออกกฎการแข่งขันให้เข้มงวด แต่คงเป็นไปไม่ได้ เพราะเด็กวัยรุ่นสมัยนี้ไม่เล่นกีฬา และไม่ขยัน และไม่ยอมทนต่อความลำบากแล้ว

การแข่งเรือระหว่างหมู่บ้านต่างๆทุกปี ทำให้คนในท้องถิ่นใกล้เคียงได้รู้จักกัน ส่วนชายหนุ่มที่เป็นวัยรุ่นในหมู่บ้านได้มีการออกกำลังกาย มีความอดทนต่อความลำบาก มีความสามัคคี รู้จักนํ้าใจนักกีฬา และมีความรับผิดชอบ เด็กที่เคยพายเรือในทีมจะไม่ไปติดยาเสพติด แต่จะมีความคิดเป็นผู้ใหญ่มากขึ้น ดังนั้นการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เกิดขึ้นทำให้เราอดเสียดายไม่ได้

บรรดาชาวบ้านที่รู้ว่า ทีมพายเรือจะเอาเรือลงนํ้าเพื่อฝึกซ้อมพายเรือ ก็พากันออกมาให้กำลังใจ และเอาใจช่วยตอนยกเรือลงไปที่ริมฝั่ง เราก็ได้เจอชาวบ้านพาลูกๆมาดูกัน บรรยากาศก็ค่อนข้างน่าตื่นเต้น เพราะฝีพายแต่ละคนดูผอมแห้งไปหน่อย ตัวก็เล็ก แขนก็สั้น พอยกเรือเหล็กขึ้นจากที่รอง บางคนก็ร้องว่าลื่นมือ เราก็เลยตะโกนบอกให้หยุดเป็นระยะ ให้บางคนได้หายใจ และขยับหาที่จับเรือใหม่ พวกเขาต้องหยุดหลายครั้ง ทางลงก็ลื่นมากมีโคลนเกาะไปตามทาง เราก็บอกให้เอาข้างเรือลง อย่าลงตรงๆ เด็กก็ทำตาม แต่พอใกล้น้ำ บางคนหมดแรง เรือเหล็กหนักมาก เรือก็ไหลลงไปบนน้ำกระแทกผืนน้ำ จนนํ้ากระโจนเข้าเรือ คนที่ตัวเบาก็รีบไปวิดนํ้าออก เขากลัวเรือจะจมน้ำ คนดูก็แตกฮือ แต่ทุกอย่างก็ผ่านพ้นไปได้ดี
