#315-318, Weekend of green fields, animals, sunsets and encounters by the river, the OPED project.

These are photos from my most recent weekend break in Nongkhai. The rainy season is here to stay for almost two months.

Rice fields along the train journey from Udon to Nongkhai have become soaked with rain water. The scenery is very green and refreshing to my mind. The cityscapes of big cities have disappeared and replaced by green colour and light clean air for my lungs. Old wooden houses in Nongkhai could still be seen in the old part of the town which is located along the length of the river.

There has been a sudden boom in house construction two years ago. Some new home towns and shops now appear around the market place and several big houses were built on newly acquired land by the river front. I am glad that most local people and villagers have not yet sold all their rice fields to developer. Farmers still work on their rice fields and keep some cattles. Life is still slow and villagers still go fishing in the river, digging for bamboo shoots and foraging for mushrooms in the nearby woods.

The weather has become quite present as it rained more frequently. The mother cat came to watch over me quite often, her daughter Jilly has become very talkative. She rarely meowed but since she has her kittens she became very loud. Jilly would come up to me meowing for some milk. I often gave in to her request and she would have her extra milk alone in the kitchen. Rosie is still very jumpy and wouldn’t allow me to get too close to her.

The routine evening walk was very peaceful and quiet. I like to see the reflection of silver light on the water, the silver ripples of energy entertwined into long strings of liquid silky strands sliding along the river into infinity. The golden sunlight suddenly lit everything up.

The river always gave me a nice surprise as I ran into a cyclist whom I used to know two years ago. He has just started cycling last year. He told me that he always did the river circuit to his home which amounted to thirty kilometers of cycling every weekend. That’s why he looked very fit and healthy.

Sunday started without rain so I had some extra helping hands to help with the banana groves and pruning fruit trees. My gardener got her nephew teenager to help her out; the real reason was to prevent the teenager from playing computer games all day! He came in a bright yellow motor bike without any gardening gear. So, he had to borrow our boots, gloves and sun hat. He did about two hours’ work as we didn’t want him to get too tired or put off gardening work. The sky was very cloudy whole day with some breezes making it perfect for working in the banana groves. So, we hope that he would come to help out again and would stop playing computer games all weekends. The two months’ old kittens began to be more adventurous and started to climb small plants and pot plants.

The heavy rain over the weekend has made the ground around the house very soft and soggy. The rain water could not run smoothly off to the lower sides of the house. So I had to improvise a ditch for irrigation. I had my gardener’s neighbour to help out on this project as he used to build houses. He had to cut the cement path obstructing the running water and he put in a pipe for faster water flow. This faster draining system will prevent flooding of the lawn and some low lying area, thus preventing some trees from dying. Two weeks ago, I lost two magnolia trees because of the flood water from river. Luckily, other fruit trees survived the one week’s flooding of the low land.

This has been a very busy weekend full of activities and moments of peaceful walk and joyful experiences. I am very grateful to all the good people around me and to the river, trees, insects, animals in my garden including those cats and kittens. These kittens have become used to me but they would still run away from my reach. They are getting better at climbing trees. But the bigger cats performed like leopards on my tall tree.

ฝนที่กระหน่ำทางภาคเหนือและอีสาน ทำให้ข้างทางรถไฟผ่านเป็นสีเขียวขจี. ทุ่งหญ้าและนากลายเป็นสีเขียวมรกต อากาศก็สะอาดสดชื่น เราชอบนั่งขมวิวรอบข้างทางจากอุดรถึงหนองคาย ทุ่งนาที่นอกเมืองหนองคายก็เริ่มมีต้นข้าวเต็มไปหมด ถ้าแดดออกจัดจะทำให้สีเขียวตัดกับสีท้องฟ้า โชคดีที่ชาวบ้านส่วนใหญ่ยังไม่ได้ขายที่นาให้กับนายทุน ชาวบ้านยังคงใช้ชีวิตกับการปลูกข้าว ขุดหาหน่อไม้ ไปจับปลาที่แม่น้ำเป็นอาหาร กลางคืนก็เดินหากบในบ่อน้ำ หลายคนเลี้ยงวัวเพื่อหาเงินประทั้งชีวิต อาหารการกินค่อนข้างอุดมสมบูรณ์ การใช้ชีวิตก็ช้าและไปเรื่อยๆ ไม่ต้องรีบร้อนหรือมีความกดดันมาก หากมีความพอเพียง

แมวอ้วนขึ้นทุกตัวในเดือนนี้ แม่แมวชอบขึ้นมาหาเราและ มาหาที่นอน จิลลี่เปลี่ยนไปมากตั้งแต่มีลูก มันไม่เคยมาร้องเรียกเรามาก่อน แต่เดี๋ยวนี้มันจะวิ่งมาหาและร้องบอกว่าหิวมาก เราก็ให้นมมันกินในห้องครัวตัวเดียว เพราะมันต้องมีตมเลี้ยงลูกของมัน ตอนนี้ก็มีแต่เจ้าโรซี่ตัวเดียวที่มักกระโดดหนี เวลาเราเข้าใกล้มัน

ตอนเย็นเราไปเดินเล่นริมแม่น้ำ ระดับนํ้ายังสูงอยู่แต่ไม่ท่วมเข้าที่แล้ว อากาศเหมาะกับการเดินออกกำลังกาย ได้เจอนักปั่นจักรยานที่เคยรู้จักมาสองปีก่อน เดี๋ยวนี้เขาปั่นจักรยานวันละสามสิบกิโลทุกสุดสัปดาห์ ทำให้เขาแข็งแรงและ มีสุขภาพดีมาก เขามาเส้นทางริมแม่น้ำโขงทุกครั้ง นี่ทำให้เราต้องมาคิดทบทวนตัวเองบ้างแล้ว และเริ่มออกกำลังกายอย่างจริงจัง แสงตอนเย็นสวยมาก สะท้อนที่แผ่นนํ้าเป็นสีเงินอมฟ้า แม่นํ้าแลดูกว้างขึ้นมากและมีพลังเงียบๆ

โชคดีมากที่ฝนตกตอนกลางคืน ตอนกลางวันเราก็ทำงานในสวนได้. เสาร์อาทิตย์ ที่ผ่านมาพวกเราต้องจัดการกับต้นกล้วยที่หมดอายุ แบะเริ่มมีเชื้อราของโรคตายพราย เราต้องหาคนมาช่วยงานสองคน คนหนึ่งเป็นหลานของคนสวน พ่อของเขาอยากให้มาทำงาน แทนการเล่นเกมส์ทั้งวันที่บ้าน เราก็ให้ลองงานสองชั่วโมง เพราะเป็นวัยรุ่น อละไม่เคยต้องทำงานมาก่อน ส่วนเพื่อนบ้านของคนสวนนั้น ทำงานดีมาก เพราะเป็นคนทำงานและเป็นช่างสร้างบ้านมาก่อน

ปีนี้ฝนตกหนักมากกว่าปีก่อน ทำให้มีนํ้าท่วมขังในที่มาก ดินชุ่มมากและเรากลัวต้นไม้ตาย เราจึงให้มีการจุดร่องน้ำเพื่อ ช่วยการระบายน้ำลงสู่ที่ต่ำได้เร็วขึ้น เราให้คนเดิมมาช่วยแก้ปัญหา ต้องมีการตัดทางเดินปูนออก เพื่อวางท่อสำหรับระบายนํ้าลงข้างล่าง ตอนที่นํ้าท่วมที่ตํ่าข้างล่าง มีต้นจำปาตายไปสองต้น โชคดีมีน้ำขังอยู่แค่ห้าวัน ต้นไม้ใหญ่และ ผลไม้รอดตายอย่างหวุดวิด และแตกใบอ่อนกันด้วย

พวกเราก็ทำงานกันไป แต่พวกแมวก็เล่นกันไป ลูกแมวเริ่มกล้าออกมาเล่นข้างนอก และหัดปีนต้นไม้ต้นเล็ก และกระถางต้นไม้. อต่มันยังลงจากต้นไม้ไม่เป็น. เราต้องไปช่วยเอาลูกแมวลงจากต้นไม้ เพราะตัวหนึ่งตกลงจากต้นไม้ และไม่ได้เอาขาลง ส่วนแมวตัวใหญ่ปีนต้นไม้เก่งมาก เกือบถึงยอดต้นไม้ และลงจากต้นไม้เก่งด้วย

เรารู้สึกว่าโชคดีมากที่มีกัลยาณมิตรอยู่รอบข้าง และได้อยู่ในสภาพแวดล้อมที่ดี และปลอดภัยจากภัยธรรมชาติ มีความอุดมสมบูรณ์ แล้วยังมีแมวมาอยู่ด้วยหลายตัว เราก็กวังว่าเราคงได้ทำความความฝันของเราในการใช้ชีวิตแบบพอเพียงได้อย่างสมบูรณ์แบบในอนาคต
