There are several methods in terms of the appointment of a tribal chief, among them by:

inherited
elected democratically by all tribal members or by tribal elders
through a race or contest
A new elected chief is usually inaugurated by a customary chief in a ceremony. The position of a chief is usually a lifetime or as long as the chief is able to take office.
