We are not sure of their last names, and many of us have never heard of their first names or their real names, and our history has ignored them and the role played by this Black woman in his being a very well-known American medicine. They are Betsey, Anarcha, & Lucy. They are women whose bodies are used by doctor J. Marion Sims to study and experiment. Experiments and efforts will ultimately make it "the father of modern gynecology." Sims opened a clinic in Montgomery, Ala. And to keep it monetarily monopolized, he started doing work on the estate, they worked with simple tools of providing medical care to the slaves. But during that time, he met with captive women who had what we now know as an obstetric fistula (an opening, which usually occurs after traumatic labor). Dr. Sims decided to test three slaves - Betsey, Anarcha, and Lucy. Those procedures are painful, often done without anesthesia. Sims does more of these procedures, running them in front of a group of medical professionals. Women can not say naked and experiment in front of others. To make matters worse, the operation did not work early, resulting in tearing, and even more pain. Sims conducted this experiment from 1846 to 1849. After 30 procedures on Anarcha he was able to perfect his technique. This procedure helped him succeed in the medical field. He became President of the American Medical Association and a member of the New York Medical Academy. He became a renowned surgeon, and the statues were eventually established in his honor.
