QUICK PHYSICS INFO: A Magnificent Energy Source; ‘Helium-3’
Materials such as uranium used in today's nuclear power plants leave a lot of waste and are less efficient. Here is helium 3, an isotope of helium. It leaves much less waste than radioactive materials used on Earth. But when it breaks up, it makes much more energy. This isotope is abundant in the Moon.
In fact, helium 3 atoms are formed in very hot and radioactive stars such as the sun. So, how does this atom move to the moon? The answer to this question is simple. We've all heard the solar winds that sometimes affect the world. Sometimes they interfere with electricity interruptions, sometimes with communication. The magnetic field of the Earth pushes back most solar winds to the outer space and doesn’t let them enter in the atmosphere, and the Earth is affected by this at the least. Since there is no such mechanism in the Moon, all solar winds hit the moon's surface, and 3 helium atoms accumulate on the Moon's surface.
With 40 tons of helium 3, the US's 1-year energy needs can be met very comfortably. On the moon, helium 3, which accumulates to this day, is thought to be between 1 and 4.5 million tons at worst. So with a rough guess we can say that the moon has sources of helium 3 to meet the US's energy for 25,000-years. These are the rough estimates, of course. This conclusion is coming from the fact that the moon has been affected by these solar winds for 4.5 million years. So much more helium 3 is thought to be on the Moon surface of sources.
In fact, we can understand how much the Moon is a valuable source for all the mankind. Already NASA and the Russian Space Agency must have realized this value that the two institutions will be working on the Moon again in the upcoming years.
