Once you enter the land of lamas, you will definitaly came across the multicolored flags hung up at every home, shop or even at the top of the hills.

This flags are known to be sacred and are also called "The Prayer Flags".
People who follow buddhisum have it everywhere, at their home, at their vehicles, working place and monasteries.

I have seen them earlier in my place as well hung up at the back of car or in front of bikes, so I was curious to know the story behind these flags.

So at Nako, I finally asked an old woman about these flags.
She was even more curious to tell about the flags.
These flags have different colours and those are RED, BLUE, WHITE, YELLOW AND GREEN which are always arranged in a specific order, from left to right: blue, white, red, green, yellow.

She told that every colour represents an element.
Elements like Air, Fire, Water, Earth and Space.
White symbolises Air, Red is Fire.
Green is Water, Yellow is Earth, and Blue is Sky.

They also represent directions – North, South, East, West and Center.
Not only colours, these flags have devine mantras written over them and each mantra have its own specific meaning.

It is said that the mantras printed on the flags are carried on the wind and believed to spread goodwill and positive energy wherever they go.

She also added that you don't have to be a Bhuddist to hang prayer flags, but there is a right way to hang them. While hanging the flags you must wish for positivity and goodwill for the entire world.

The most sacred and commonly enchanted mantra is "OM MANI PADME HUM".
This mantra have really deep meaning.
It is said that if you recite the mantra during meditation, it can cure Pride, Jealousy, Ignorance, Greed and Aggression.

We have a large Buddhist Center not far from me, here in Wisconsin. Seeing prayer flags is not uncommon, but we certainly do not have the scenery or a mountain top to photograph them on! Beautiful photos!
