Though famous and being mobbed in Europe, record executives for their American label did not feel The Beatles would succeed in the US. The lyrics were an attempt to depict an innocent relationship, while being acceptable to the record company.
My Own Lyrics Challenge is going through the years to spotlight cool songs and this post is for 1964. “I Want to Hold Your Hand” became The Beatles’ first of many American number 1 hits upon release.
It also took number 1 spot on the year end Billboard Hot 100 which was full of their other songs of the time further down the list. The popularity of this song is said to have started the “British Invasion: of American music.
The Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show for three consecutive Sundays in February 1964 to great anticipation as "I Want to Hold Your Hand" had already risen to No. 1 in the charts. This version of the song opened the first of those shows, and was watched by over 70 million viewers.
