My Own Lyrics Challenge 1950 - Mona Lisa – Ray Evans, Jay Livingston
The title and lyrics of “Mona Lisa” refer to the renaissance portrait painted by Leonardo da Vinci. Is she real and happy? Is she hiding a broken heart with her smile? Or is she just a woman from the imagination of the artist? We will never know for sure, but the mystery entertains many.
My Own Lyrics Challenge is going through the years to spotlight cool songs and this post is for 1950. “Mona Lisa” as recorded by Nat King Cole for the film Captain Carey, U.S.A. spent five weeks at number one in the Billboard singles chart in 1950 and was number 2 for the year.
This version of the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1992. Nat King Cole said this song was one of his favorites among his recordings.
And here is the film version of the song:
Mona Lisa lyrics – Ray Evans, Jay Livingston
Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa, men have named you
You're so like the lady with the mystic smile
Is it only 'cause you're lonely they have blamed you?
For that Mona Lisa strangeness in your smile?
Do you smile to tempt a lover, Mona Lisa?
Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?
Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there and they die there
Are you warm, are you real, Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely lovely work of art?
Do you smile to tempt a lover, Mona Lisa?
Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?
Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there and they die there
Are you warm, are you real, Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely lovely work of art?
Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa
