My first few hours with esteem (1.5.1)
For those who don't know, Esteem is a mobile Steem app for Android and iOS developed by the witness @good-karma. download on his post here. I have been looking around for a mobile app to use Steem with, despite the fact that I am quite happy with the web interface of Steem and I'm totally happy with keeping a Chrome tab running in the background on my OnePlus 5. So, I was interested when I heard of this app, esteem.
So, first things out of the way. I like the app very much, it adds features that you would normally need outside services for (like notifications for instance). However, I don't think at the moment that it will be my primary way of interacting with Steem. Not because of the app, but because I prefer to write longer articles on Steem and a keyboard is way more comfortable for me to do that on. Let's face it, mobile keyboards are really annoying for anything longer than 100 words.
So, everything from the website version of Steem is correct and present. There is a small learning curve as everything is in a different place, but once you get it, there is no problem. So, a short list of things that I liked and a few things that I wish were different. (@good-karma, this is in no way a criticism of your work, as I said I like it alot!).
Things I liked
Top of things that I liked was the ability to make drafts! Especially on a mobile app, this is a godsend! You can slowly craft out a post and have it take shape over a few days without losing it all when you accidentally close the tab or your phone dies. One thing that was a little strange was that saving your draft would create a new draft instead of overwriting the one that you updated from.
Another big plus was the bookmarks. This is the most annoying thing about Steemit. Hunting back through your comments or replies to find the interesting article that you found several days ago.
Notifications are also a huge deal for most new users. I prefer @ginabot, but I understand that this is not everyone's cup of tea.
Post scheduling is also a good addition. Normally I just write and post. But having posts ready to go at a different time would be great if I wanted to write 2 posts today and nothing tomorrow!
Fine grained login. You can use any of your logins (master, wallet or posting). Obviously, which one you use will affect what the app can do for you. One little thing I wasn't keen on was that the initial login asks for your master password, and the other logins are hidden in the advanced tab.
Multiple account logins. This is super handy if you have more than one account, at the moment I use 2 browsers, one for my account and another for an account that I run for an orchestra (@musicapoetica).
Things I wish were different.
A better dark mode. At the moment, on my OP5 it is more gray than black. And on some pages it reverts to mostly white!
The back button on Android doesn't take you back to the same place (if it was a list) on the previous page, but puts you at the top. Also, sometimes the back button prompts for exit when I was expecting to go back. (This is an endless Android user's gripe...).
I would like something between the normal view and the compact view. Normal has large full width thumbnails whilst compact has no thumbnails. I would love something in between, similar to the way Google Newstand handles it with the "mini cards" setting.
I would love something like a swipe gesture to bring the main menu in and out. At the moment, it is accessible only via the hamburger menu in the top left, which is pretty hard to get to on the OP5 with one hand.
So, those are my thoughts on the esteem app. I definitely recommend you try it out for yourself, it is under constant development (I think another version is coming this week or next week), so things are improving from an already high base! Thanks again to @good-karma for the app, and vote for him for witness if you like the app and the development of a mobile version of Steemit!

I hope they can incorporate features of the app here to the site such as the draft and post scheduling. Those are to features I could put to use right now.
Yes, draft would be useful, but I don't know if that would with the blockchain nature of steemit. Same with scheduled posts. I guess that's why they need to be stored outside of the website?
Thanks @bengy. The thing that has held me back from using a phone app for steem is security. Have you worked through this at all for this app? Ie once they have keys above post/memo they can move money. And with the master or owner key I think they can try and take ownership right?
Best
As far as I know, the keys are stored on the phone and do not leave it. Yes I guess in principle the developer could take the keys and screw with you, but I think that would be counter-productive.
At some point you do need to trust a bit. You need to trust the security of your device, your browser, your network, your ISP and so on.
However, this is a question best addressed to @good-karma.
Yes. Love that blockchain removes trust but unless you're coding every portal yourself you gotta trust the middle people who connect you to the blockchain.
Thing is with so much money at stake there's an huge incentive to misuse those keys.
Best
For Steem, unless you use the master key (you shouldn't) the active wallet key is still not much use to a potential theft. Unless you keep everything in liquid Steem or SBD (and you shouldn't), then it should be locked away in SP. This it would take forever to power that down, by which time you should have noticed! Then using your master and a trusted portal, you could reverse the power down and change the active key.

Thanks for the reveiw. I will have to give this a try
It is worth it! A decent app for Steemit and one that is constantly updated.
Congratulations! Your post has been selected as a daily Steemit truffle! It is listed on rank 25 of all contributions awarded today. You can find the TOP DAILY TRUFFLE PICKS HERE.
I upvoted your contribution because to my mind your post is at least 22 SBD worth and should receive 47 votes. It's now up to the lovely Steemit community to make this come true.
