Mentilin or Tarsius bancanus is an identity animal of Bangka Belitung. One of the species of Tarsius which is endemic to Sumatra and Kalimantan is defined as the fauna of the identity of the province of Bangka Belitung.

Mentilin is in scientific language (latin) known as in English known as Horsfield's Tarsier or Western Tarsier.

There are 4 subspecies of Horsfield's Tarsier, Tarsius bancanus bancanus, Tarsius bancanus borneanus, Tarsius bancanus natunensis, and Tarsius bancanus saltator.

Description. Mentilin or Horsfield's Tarsier has traits and behaviors like other types of tarsiers. The body of the primate is relatively small with a body length ranging from 12-15 cm with a body weight of about 128 grams (male) and 117 grams (female). Mentilin body hair is reddish brown to brownish brown.

Primates are used as fauna identity of Bangka Belitung province has a long tail, even longer than his body length. The length of the tail mentilin (Tarsius bancanus) can reach 18-22 cm. Like other tarsiers, Horsfield's Tarsier has a pair of very large eyes.

Mentilin (Tarsius bancanus) is a carnivore. The food is mainly insects such as grasshoppers, beetles, butterflies, locusts, ants and crickets, but the fauna of Bangka Belitung province identity also feeds on other small vertebrates such as bats and snakes.

Mentilin classified as a nocturnal animal that many rest during the day on small branches with an altitude of 3 to 5 meters from the surface of the ground and just wake up for activity as the evening approaches.

Distribution and Conservation. In Indonesia, this Tarsius can be found on the islands of Borneo, Sumatra, and the surrounding islands such as Bangka, Belitung, and Karimata. In addition there are also in Sabah and Sarawak (Malaysia) and Brunei Darussalam.

Distribution is more specifically seen by type. Tarsius bancanus saltator is located in Belitung, Indonesia. Tarsius bancanus natunensis is found on the island of Natuna and the island of Subi Island, Indonesia. Tarsius bancanus borneanus is present in Brunei, Indonesia (Kalimantan and Karimata Island) and Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) and on the island of Karimata (Indonesia). Tarsius bancanus bancanus

In general, mentilin or Horsfield's Tarsier is categorized in a vulnerable conservation status by IUCN Redlist. However, if based on each subspecies, Tarsius bancanus natunensis is categorized as Critically Endangered, Tarsius bancanus bancanus and Tarsius bancanus saltator are categorized as Endangered. While Tarsius bancanus borneanus is categorized as Vulnerable.

By CITES, this tarsier is included in the Appendix II list. Meanwhile, by the Indonesian government, mentilin and all types of tarsiers are protected under the PP. No. 7 of 1999.

Although less popular than the tertiary Tarsius in Sulawesi, but mentilin became one of Indonesia's earth wealth. Moreover, this primate is set to become the mascot of one province in Indonesia, Bangka Belitung. So, let us recognize and preserve it.
