‌‌‌एक मेंढकों का राजा गंगदत्त रहते था। वह अपनी कूट नीति से काम करते था।

‌‌‌किसी कुएँ में मेंढकों का राजा गंगदत्त नामक मेंढक रहता था। एक दिन की बात है। कि कुएँ में रहट के सहारे वह भी कुएँ से बाहर आ गया। उन दिनों उसे उकसे बंधु-बांधवों ने बहुत व्याकुल किया हुआ था। बाहर आने पर वह सोचने लगा कि किस प्रकार उनसे बदला लिया जा सकता है।

वह इस विषय पर विचार कर ही रहा था कि उसने प्रियदर्शन नाम का एक कृष्ण सर्प को बिल में घुसते हुए देखा। उसे देखकर वह सोचने लगा कि क्यों न इस कृष्ण को कुएं में ले जाकर अपने उन शत्रुओं को विनाश ही करवा दूँ ? कहा भी गया है कि बलवान शत्रु के साथ किसी बलवान को ही भिड़ाकर उसका विनाश किया जा सकता है। इस प्रकार करने से अपना कार्य भी सिद्ध हो जाता है। और किसी प्रकार का कष्ट भी नही होता।
गंगदत्त सोच राह था कि पैर में गड़े काँटे को किसी दूसरो काँटे से ही निकाला जा सकता है। उसी प्रकार अपने सबल उग्र शत्रु को किसी उग्र और सबल के साथ भिड़ाकर ही बुदि्धमान व्यक्तिे उकसा उन्मूलन करना चाहिए।
यह सोचकर वह उस सर्प के बिल के समीप जाकर उसे बुलाने लगा। उसकी आवाज सुनकर प्रियदर्शन के अनुभव किया कि वह व्यक्ति तो उसकी जाति का है। नहीं। किंतु सर्प के अतिरिक्त इस लोक में मेरा किसी अन्य से परिचय नही है। तब बाहर जाने से पहले मुझे यह जान लेना चाहिए। कि यह बुलाने वाला कौन ? क्योंकि जिस व्यक्ति के स्वभाव, कुल और निवास का पता न हो, उसकेसाथ संपर्क स्थापित करने का प्रयास कम ही करना चाहिए।
इस प्रकार की बात विचारकर सर्प ने उससे पूदा, तुम कौन हो ?
मैं मेंटकों का रजा गंगदत्त हॅू। आपसे मित्रता करने के लिए आया हॅू।
प्रियदर्शन कहने लगा, यह कैसे हो सकता है? तृण भी क्या अग्नि के साथ मित्रता कर सकते है ? कहा भी गया है। कि जो जीव जिस जीव का वध्य होता है, वह कभी स्वप्न में भी उसके पास नही जाता है। तुम यह व्यर्थ की बात क्यों कर रहे हो ?
गंगदत्त कहने लगा, आप कहते तो ठीक ही है। आप हमोर स्वाभाविक शत्रु है। किन्तु इस समय मैं किसी अन्य शत्रु के तिरस्कार से दुखी और भयवीत हॅू। कहा भी गया है कि सर्वनाश की स्थिति में अथवा अपने प्राणों के विनाश-काल में मनुष्य को चाहिए कि वह आवश्यकतानुसार शत्रु की अधीनता स्वीकार करके भी अपने प्राण और धन की रक्षा करे।
सर्प ने पूछा, बोलो, किसने किया है तुम्हारा अपमान ?
मेंढक बोला, और किसी ने नहीं मेरे अपनों ने ही मेरा अपमान किया है।
तुम रहते कहां हो ? किसी बावली में , किसी कूप में किसी सरोवर में अथवा किसी झील में ?
में एक कुएँ में रहता हॅू।

देखो, हमारे पैर तो होते नही है, इसलिए मैं कुएं में प्रविष्ट नही हो सकता। और यदि सिकी प्रकार वहां प्रविष्ट हो भी गया तो वहाँ मेरे रहने के लिए कोई स्थान नही होगा। अत: यहाँ तुम्हारा इच्िछत बात सिद्ध नही होगा। अच्छा यही है। कि तुम यहाँ से चले जाओ।
किसी ने ठीक ही कहा ह कि ऐश्वर्य को चाहने वाले व्यक्तिे चाहिए कि वह उसी वस्तु को खाए, जिसे खाना उसके लिए शक्य हो और उसके पेट में पहुँचकर जो वस्तु पच जाए तथा परिणाम में हितकारक भी हो।
यह सुनकर मेंढक बोला, महाशय¡ आप चले तो आइए मै बड़ी सरलता से उस कुआ में आपको प्रविष्ट करा दूंगा। वहाँ जल के छोर के एक रमणीय कोटर भी है। उसमें रहकर आप अनायास ही अपना पेट भर सकेंगे।
उसकी बात सुनकर सर्प सोचने लगा कि वह वृद्ध हो चला है। कभी संयाग से ही कोई चूहा उसके मुख में फँस पाता है। इस कुल का नाश करने वाला ने मेरी जीविका का बड़ा ही सुखकर उपाय बताया है। मुझे वहाँ चले जाना चाहिए। किसी ने ठीक ही कहा है कि जिस व्यक्ति की शक्ति कमजोर हो चुकी है। और उसका कोई साहयक भी न हो तो उसे व्यक्ति को चाहिए। कि वह अपनी जीविका के लिए अत्यंत मुखप्रद और सरलतम उपाह का ही चयन करे, यही बुद्धिमत्ता है।
यह विचार कर उसे गंगदत्त से कहा, ठीक है, तुम आग आगे चलो, मैं तुम्हारे साथ आता हॅू।
यह सुनकर मेढ़को कहने लगा, ठीक है चलते है। मै आपको बड़े सुख से वहॉ ले जाऊँगा, वहाँ रहने के लिए रम्य स्थान भी दूंगा और नित्य के भोजन का भी खुलकर प्रबंध होगा। किंतु मेरा एक आग्रह मानना होगा।
वह क्या ?
वह यह कि आपको मेरे परिवार वालो की रक्षा करनी होगा। मै जिन-जिनको तुम्हे कहॅू, केवल उन्हे ही मारकर
आगे की कहानी अगले हफ्ते शुरु होगी।
