Escape Velocity--Defying Gravity

In physics, it's commonly described as the speed needed to break free from a gravitational field. (If I bullet were fired straight up, how fast would it have to leave the barrel in order to keep going into space indefinitely?) If there were no atmosphere, the answer would be the same for every object on Earth: about 25,000 mph. Though the speed is the same, the amount of energy needed to reach this speed increases with mass. More massive objects obviously require more power to reach escape velocity.

Here are the choices for those of us hoping to defy gravity:

1)  Find a way to neutralize the atmosphere and jump straight up at 25,000 miles-per-hour without blowing ourselves to pieces 

or

2)  Lose weight.  If we can survive a transformation from mass to energy (which is physically possible through incineration), then gravity can’t stop us.  We may come and go as we please. 

We already are pure energy
Mass is just a game we've been playing
