Do we really want to loose by offense?

What great news did we face, when Eskimo Callboy announced, that they will take part in the German selection for ESC 2022. And their song Pump It received international attention with thousands of reactions and millions of views in a few weeks on Youtube. Could there be any better condition to enter ESC and have a great chance to win?

Well, no I guess. Looking back at the past years, Germany was not successful within the contest, always being placed among the last in the rankings. Following reactions of fans of both, Eskimo Callboy as well as the ESC and following foreign ESC fans, reactions and bookmakers, Germany’s chances raised immense. Is there anything that could go wrong this time? Well, yes, there could be something.

On the 10th of February, the German ESC committee, mainly influenced by the broadcasting organization NDR published the 6 songs being available for selection to participate in ESC:

• Maël & Jonas
• Felicia Lu
• Eros atomus
• Emily Roberts
• Nico Suave & Team Liebe

Never heard of them? Don’t worry, most Germans have neither. So what happened? According to the committee, there were hard discussions and Eskimo Callboy isn’t suited for radios, therefore, they have been rejected. Ok, let’s be honest. You have to be suited for radio, if you want to present a huge stage performance at ESC, just because German official pop radio stations have to play the 6 songs until decision and they fear to loose listeners. Every artists is portrayed in the same room, by an interviewer, wearing the same clothes. This means, all are done at the same day. And which image did NDR publish of Eskimo Callboy? One within this exact room. Ok, circumstances.

Were Eskimo Callboy chosen but rejected later based on radio-decisions? Many questions arise from day to day, especially as neither ESC committee, nor the NDR are really answering open questions.
