Equifax

Half of all Americans could have had their sensitive data compromised by a security breach at the credit reporting agency Equifax. William Brangham joins John Yang to discuss what happened and what consumers should do to safeguard their credit.

The clouds surrounding Equifax are growing ever darker. On Monday, Bloomberg cited multiple sources in saying that the credit bureau suffered a major hacking attack in March—one that took place months before the July breach the company disclosed on Sept. 7, which involved thieves stealing personal information from over 140 million Americans.

The vulnerability was in a popular open-source software package known as Apache Struts. What’s even crazier is that at least 65% of Fortune 100 companies still use web applications built with the Struts framework. Information comprised includes names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and driver’s license numbers. About 209,000 consumer’s credit card numbers were stolen as well.
