EOSIO 백서를 읽을 때도 그랬지만, 에브리피디아 백서를 읽으면서도 가슴이 벅차 오름니다. 정말 새로운 가능성 있는 변화가 다가오고 있구나를 느꼈으면 좋겠습니다. 새로운 기회의 땅이 눈 앞에 펼쳐져 있습니다.

Introduction: The Everipedia Network
그냥 백과사전이라고 안 하고 네트워크라고 강조하잖아. 커뮤니티 라는 거지.

The Everipedia Network (EPN) is a decentralized encyclopedia database fully governed by token holders. Token holders can approve edits, create network-wide rules that govern the encyclopedia, as well as buy and sell services for tokens on the network. This also means that tokens play a central role in the consensus protocol of finalizing data entry into the network.

블록체인 커뮤니티에서 가장 중요한 주체는 뭐니 뭐니 해도 토큰 홀더들이야. 에브리피디아 네트워크는 토큰 홀더들에 의해 완전히 governed되는 탈중화된 백과사전 데이터베이스이지. governed 이것도 우리말로 옮기기 참 뭐한 단어다. 토큰 홀더들에 의해 통치되는 지배되는 좌지우지되는 관리되는. 암튼 토큰홀더들이 커뮤니티가 돌아가는데 필요한 중요한 의사결정을 한다는 거지.

The Everipedia Network turns the non-profit knowledge industry into a knowledge economy where economic incentives can guide the creation of knowledge content. With the EPN one can connect directly to the world’s largest wiki database from any site. We imagine a future in which even non-programmers can create sites that utilize the Everipedia Network through something as simple as a Wordpress template.

지금까지의 중앙화 된 웹 서비스의 문제점은 글쓰기와 같은 지식 창출 과정에 직접적으로 금전적 보상을 안 해준다는 거지. 플랫폼 제공자들은 교묘한 논리로(마치 컨텐치를 너무나 좋아서 만들고 공유하고 싶었는데 이것을 무상으로 할 수 있게 해주다니와 같이) 보상 없이 컨텐츠를 생산하게 했던거야. 누군가 문제제기를 하기 전 까지는 아무도 그것에 대해 고민해 보지 않았던거지.

백과사전도 마찬가지지. 에브리피디아는 여기에 문제제기를 하는 거고. 에브리피디아 네트워크는 비영리 지식산업을 지식 경제로 전환하는 거야. 토큰을 가지고 경제적 인센티브를 제공해서. 인센티브가 지식 컨텐츠 생성을 이끌 수 있도록. 사람들은 어느 사이트에서나 세상에서 가장 큰 위키 데이터베이스인 에브리피디아 네트워크에 직접적으로 연결할 수 있게 되는거야.

Network effects have had a heavy centralization effect on the knowledge industry preventing serious competition and market forces from springing up. Wikipedia is one of the largest websites in the world boasting over 19 billion pageviews a month across all languages.[1][2] However, Wikipedia unintentionally traps the knowledge capital it generates within its own platform when its content could be used to create a thriving knowledge economy.

Additionally, one clear shortcoming Wikipedia has demonstrated is its inability to capture any of the monetary and intrinsic value of content that its platform and community has created, as evidenced by bi-annual donation banner campaigns.

에브리피디아는 위키피디아를 대체하기 위해 등장했다고 볼 수 있어. 왜 상생이 아니라 대체하려고 했을까? 그럴 수 밖에 없었다고 말해야겠지. 그럴 수 밖에 없는 이유가 뭐야? 위키피디아의 가장 큰 단점 중 하나는 컨텐츠의 금전적 가치와 내재 가치를 알아낼 능력이 없다는 거지. 위키피디아에게 너무 뭐라고 하지마. 위키피디아는 그 시대가 원하는 그 시대에 할 수 있는 최선을 다한거지. 위키피디아는 기부 모델을 선택할 수 밖에 없었던거지.

In this regard, there is room to dramatically upend the status quo by creating an open, distributed knowledge base with technology that properly tracks the value creation of the community and returns this value back to the creators, curators, and developers of the platform. Additionally, a distributed platform which draws consensus, contributions, incentives, and value from the participants of the network also has a unique opportunity for the participants to take part in the actual hosting, storage, and distribution of the content on such a network.

그런데 블록체인 등장으로 패러다임이 바뀐거야. 이게 알면 알수록 정말 드라마틱한 변화야. 이 드라마틱 함이 느껴져야 하는데. 네트워크(커뮤니티)가 토큰을 발행하고, 참여자들에게 보상으로 준다는 거야. 네트워크 참여자들의 노력은 네트워크의 가치로, 네트워크의 가치는 토큰의 가치로, 토큰의 가치는 실제 화폐의 가치로 환산되는 거지.

커뮤니티 토큰이라는 인센티브로 보상한다는 이 혁명적인 발상은 그 '혁명적' 이름에 걸맞는 또 다른 복잡성을 낳게 되지. 그것은 바로 '누구에게 어떤 방식으로 보상을 줄 것인가?'의 문제야. 이것을 잘 못 설계하면 커뮤니티가 꽃 피어야할 시기에 커뮤니티가 붕괴하고 말아.

에브리피디아도 이에 대한 고민이 필요하겠지. 어떻게 커뮤니티가 창출하는 가치를 적절히 추적하고, 플랫폼 개발자와 컨텐츠 생성자와 큐레이터에게 가치를 돌려줄 것인가의 문제. 개방적이고 분산된 기술은 블록체인 기술이 제공하니 이 기술 위에 올라타면 되고.

Achieving such a goal would create a peer to peer distributed content system that is properly incentivized and coordinated. Such a system would be immune to single points of failure which makes it nearly impossible to censor or block access by various bad actors.

그래서 뭘 하겠다는 건데. 적절한 조정과 인센티브가 가능한 블록체인 기반 컨텐츠(백과사전) 시스템을 만들거야. 블록체인의 장점은 잘 알지?
