1.BM wrote today, EOSIO currently prohibits creating new account names that are less than 12 characters or contain "." The purpose of this restriction is to prevent username squatting. Enterprise organizations can create a "trusted" username so that each user can trust account suffixes like ".edu" or ".com". In addition, shorter suffixes make the prefix longer, which leads to more user name naming and more sales value.
