User Martin, in discussion with user Samupaha, says that voluntarism means becoming an adult, no longer requiring a higher authority to either mother us or exploit us. It's individual responsibility and the most interesting part of what the blockchain offers. Everything that can be voluntary should be. No authority should be able to rule over others, to alter the chain without the consent of all parties. User Jetse replies that he sees issues with voluntarism. There is no absolute freedom. So a system where all is based on the will of an individual, will not work. No one is free to steal. So freedom has to be checked. The question is would the bad guys have their freedom checked voluntarily? User Martin says that voluntarism can best be seen as a check on a centralised authority, rather than seeking absolute freedom. Voluntarism rejects others imposing arbitrary restrictions that some have not willingly agreed to.

User Jetse says that EOS Amsterdam thought it best to have a broad description of how the EOS community should interact, without being too specific about the exact norms. Please feel free to comment. User Martin says that theft is not a dispute over an agreement. You can try to recast theft as a dispute but the thief has never entered into an agreement. Calling theft a dispute is a bit of a mish mash and has distracted us. User Jetse says that there is no agreement in the case of theft. It is a dispute where the original owner wants his EOS (e.g.) back from the thief. It is a civil suit basically. Very much peer to peer. But you need someone to decide (the arbitrator). In our charter we allow for multiple arbitrators to provide maximum flexibility.

User Beebop Haluula says that he hopes we get to a stage where most arbitration is done by third party commercial arbitration. Those third parties are subject to the same pressures, i.e. living up to certain standards, as current traditional arbitration services. It is possible they will also have to meet a set minimum standards to be able to call themselves an 'EOS certified arbitration service'.
