Blockproducers Are The Executive Power of EOS

EOS is in the process of building a community. Any well functioning community or country has institutions keep it running and ensure sustained prosperity. These institutions represent the 3 powers

  • legislative = lawmaking
  • judicial = administration of justice
  • executive = governing

The community members elect, appoint or employ people with the mandate to execute these 3 powers in the best interest of the community.

Dictatorships show that it is wise to

  • separate these powers and protect them from undue influence
  • avoid conflicts of interest, i.e. ensure that people in these roles serve the community and do not persue their own, private interests

For EOS and its community, the legislative role was filled by Dan Larimer, Thomas Cox and others through writing the code for EOS and the constitution. Once their task is ‘finished’ at launch, they will step back and give the community the power to alter and amend, similar to a direct democracy. Doing this, BlockOne and Dan will not experience a conflict of interest when they pursue dApp development later.

A judicial system, i.e. arbitration is created at this moment. The people building this system are very clear about the importance that the arbitrators must be well educated, independent people that are unbiased and do not have any conflict of interest.

The executive, i.e. governing role is filled by block producers. They create the infrastructure (roadbuilding) and execute rulings from arbitration (police, army). For this group, the mandate is not as clear, on the contrary ...

Like other communities and countries, EOS has chosen to impose a tax (5 % inflation) on its members to pay for these institutions. The obvious reason is to compensate people for the work they do for the community, while asking them at the same time not to seek personal gain. The tax is split between

  • lawmaking = worker proposal system - 4 % for the development of the code
  • judiciary = arbitration - (?) funding for the arbitration panel
  • executive = governing - 1 % for block producers
