The THREE Most Important Characteristics of a Block Producer.

We were just asked in an interview what are the three most important characteristics of a Block Producer. We'll post the interview when it comes out tomorrow, but wanted to put our answer in print.

1) Diversity

Our first reaction to the question was "How can you pick just three things? We need so many skills."

We need IT Skills, Programming Skill, design skill, internal communications to coordinate between BPs, external communication to keep the community informed, creative skills, onboarding of new people, marketing skills, auditing, legal, philosophical, and the list goes on.

The answer is that we need a diversity of skills. We also need a diversity of network infrastructure to be anti-fragile, a diversity of jurisdiction, geography, mentality, and more.

2) Character / Integrity

Block producers are competing with each other, but they also need to cooperate and coordinate to make EOS possible. In our opinion, the community has demonstrated an enormous capacity for cooperate already, on code updates, security patches, formal procedures, difficult decisions, and more.

Integrity is the most important part of character because, if you haven't already heard, fifteen block producers can do anything with anybody's tokens. That's the whole point of a governance blockchain. Rulings can be made by arbiters, and if EOS users don't honor the rulings fifteen block producers can enforce them.

If you're hearing this for the first time and concerned, don't be. EOS block producers have enormous economic incentive to behave well. Additionally, their transactions are delayed for 30 or 90 days. If there's something nefarious about them, red flags will pop up all over the place.

But still, integrity. And not only because they can sign transactions, but because top block producers are important influencers in the EOS ecosystem and conflicts of interests do exist.

3) Greatness

Every top BP should be great at something. Building, designing, cooperating, communication, on-boarding, security, auditing, and the list is probably longer than I can imagine.
