Hi there, you will not be able to buy EOS on Coinbase unfortunately.
One of the simplest way to get EOS from scratch is to set up a Coinbase account and a Bitfinex account. Buy Ether at Coinbase, transfer to Bitfinex then buy EOS through a standard limit trade. If you are buying a lot to hold then best to set up an Ethereum account and withdraw the EOS to cold storage until needed.

or you could buy from the Exodus wallet and register the tokens on MEW (my ether wallet).
