Environmental Activism #1 - How to save and protect water

Steemian´s today I start a series which is dear to my heart and wanted to make sure I reach enough of you with my message.

We all consist of water and therefore we need to make sure we protect it. I recently started using environmental friendly cleaning products such as Method, Sevenths Generation etc. I totally pass on all products which contain bleach such as Clorox etc. or other harmful ingredients. Instead I am using the following product line which is sometimes even cheaper than the well known brands. This company has an impressive history and was founded in 2000 by two pretty cool guys.

Here is what I currently use:

And this is what I use for my dish washer which is from a different brand called seventh generation:

Ways to Save Water Indoors

  • Check all faucets, pipes and toilets for leaks.
  • Install water saving showerheads and ultra-low-flush toilets.
  • Take shorter showers.
  • Never use your toilet as a wastebasket.
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.
  • Defrost frozen food in the refrigerator.
  • Rinse vegetables in a full sink or pan of water.
  • Fully load your dishwasher.
  • Rinse dishes in a full sink or pan of water.
  • Wash full loads of clothes.

Ways to Save Water Outdoors

  • Don't over-water landscaping.
  • Water your lawn or garden early in the morning or late in evening.
  • Adjust sprinklers so that they don't water the sidewalk or street.
  • Don't water on cool, rainy or windy days.
  • Equip all hoses with shut-off nozzles.
  • Use drip irrigation systems.
  • Plant drought-tolerant or low water-use plants and grasses.
  • Use shrubs and ground cover to reduce the amount of grass.
  • Place mulch around plants to reduce evaporation and discourage weeds.
  • Set your mower blades one notch higher, since longer grass means less evaporation.
  • Use a pool cover to cut down on water evaporation.
  • Use a bucket instead of a hose to wash your car.
  • Use a broom rather than a hose to clean sidewalks, driveways, loading docks and parking lots.

We need to save water and make sure we keep our water clean so here the easiest way to act upon right away.

Aerator:

Aerators are the screw-on tip at the end of most modern faucets. Aerators control the flow of water through your faucet by mixing air with the water as it flows through your faucet. Be sure to ask for WaterSense labeled aerators or faucets when replacing kitchen or bathroom faucet fixtures or parts with new ones – they can reduce a faucet’s water flow by 30 percent or more without sacrificing performance. Estimated cost: $1-5 each.

High efficiency showerhead:

Standard showerheads use 2.5 gallons of water or more each minute they are used. High efficiency showerheads can use up to 50% less water than standard showerheads, and WaterSense labeled showerheads are third-party tested to ensure they meet EPA water efficiency and performance criteria (i.e. you will not have to sacrifice a good shower in order to achieve water savings!). Estimated cost: $5-20.

I'm actually very worried about water consumption. Glad to see someone takes some steps towards limiting this excess....

I once rode my bike from Colorado to Standing Rock, North Dakota to protect the Missouri River from an oil pipeline, so protecting water is something very near and dear to me.

Thank you for doing your part. You seem like a bad ass! Keep posting!
