Today I came to work and could not believe my eyes. Paper, paper was everywhere! My last day of work was the 29th of December and we had to empty the paper box, why did I think? Today I know why ...

Exactly 3 days have passed and our paper box is full! Here about 100 tons of paper are stored. And that in only 3 days!
Consider that for 1 kilo of fresh, white paper you need about 2.2 kilograms of wood, 5 kilowatt hours of energy and 50 to 100 liters of water. Of course there are a lot of chemicals that pollute our wastewater. Everyone can calculate for themselves how much wood was felled for this pile.
I still expect it to you.
For 100 tons of waste paper you need:
- 220 tons of wood (!!!)
- 500,000 kilowatt hours of energy (An Austrian household consumes an average of approx. 4400 kilowatt hours of electricity per year.)
- An average of 5,000,000 liters of water
I do not want to talk about the chemicals!
I hope one or the other understands what a waste it is to make new paper. Especially since the resources are already more than short. Thankfully, the recycling of paper is already very well developed and working. Nevertheless, tons of paper are still being produced worldwide.
In my opinion, papermaking is one of the most environmentally harmful productions!

Heute bin ich zur Arbeit gekommen und konnte meinen Augen nicht trauen. Papier, überall war Papier! Mein letzter Arbeitstag war der 29. Dezember und wir mussten noch die Papierbox entleeren, wozu dachte ich mir? Heute weiß ich warum...

Es sind genau 3 Tage vergangen und unsere Papierbox ist getreten voll! Hier werden ca. 100 Tonnen Papier gelagert. Und das in nur 3 Tagen!
Man bedenke das man für 1 Kilo frisches, weißes Papier ungefähr 2,2 Kilogramm Holz, 5 Kilowattstunden Energie und 50 bis 100 Liter Wasser benötigt. Dazu kommten natürlich noch jede Menge Chemikalien die unser Abwasser belasten. Jeder kann sich selbst ausrechnen wieviel Holz für diesen Haufen gefällt wurde.
Ich rechne es euch trotzdem vor.
Für 100 Tonnen Altpapier werden benötigt:
- 220 Tonnen Holz (!!!)
- 500.000 Kilowattstunden Energie (Ein österreichischer Haushalt verbraucht durchschnittlich ca. 4400 Kilowattstunden Strom pro Jahr.)
- Im Durschnitt 5.000.000 Liter Wasser
Von den Chemikalien will ich gar nicht erst reden!
Ich hoffe der eine oder andere Versteht welche verschwendung es ist neues Papier herzustellen. Vor allem da die Ressourcen schon mehr als knapp sind. Gott sei dank ist das Recycling von Papier schon sehr gut ausgereift und funktioniert. Dennoch wird Weltweit immer noch Tonnenweise Papier hergestellt.
Meiner Meinung nach ist die Papierherstellung eine der Unweltschädlichsten Produktionen!

Good work! Just a few things that I would like to add. There is a new alternative for paper made from trees that is much more lucrative, sustainable and beneficial for the environment! China is now one of the very few countries that produce paper from stone (along with Argentina I believe)! The technology was invented by William Liang from Taiwan and is explained in detail in the Blue economy book 3.0 written by Gunter Pauli. Check this link for more details: goo.gl/a2qvvW. To briefly explain, stone paper is made from 80% calcium carbonate crush stone from mining plant wastes and 20% of a non toxic plastic HDPE (High Density PolyPhene). That paper is also fully water proof and can be constantly recycled !!! You can imagine the tremendous economic and environmental impacts of such advanced technology! This is a really great opportunity for entrepreneurship and for the environment! So No we should not stop use paper but instead we should produce and buy paper stone! :)
Great Comment! I will do my research in any case. But if the "new" paper from calcium carbonates and HDPE is then unfortunately you can not recycle it, except it is varietal. The HDPE is recycled in the floating-sink process and a HDPE with 80% CaCo3 has a density of about 1.3. So it sinks like all other plastics except PP (polypropylene). That's why it gets very difficult to recycle. I'll take a look at it. Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for the info! Yes it can be recycled, I do not know exactly the technical part of how the recycling process is done in the detail (I am currently reading the Blue economy 3.0 right now) but I has been done before. It is even a business model in some places in China. I will share more links on that subject.

Ja. Rechne mal aus was wir jedes Jahr nur an Werbung bekommen dir wir gar nicht mal lesen! Das sind einige Bäume pro Jahr!!!🤦♂️
Ja, wir haben sogar ein "keine Werbung"-Pickerl am Briefkasten, aber funktioniert leider auch nicht immer.
Möchte nicht wissen wieviele tausende Tonnen an Papier für sowas Jährlich verschwendet wird, geschweigenden wieviele Bäume dafür gefällt werden müssen!

Papier ist wirklich große Verschwendung. Trotzdem sollten wir auf neue umweltfreundlichen Varianten von Papier setzen, denn außer Plastik fällt mir nichts ein, was wir sonst verwenden könnten.

Es gibt mittlerweile Holzfreies Papier! Wie zB. aus Gras... ja das gibt es! Problem, die Herstellung und der Preis.
Ich habe ja auch mal über Papier gepostet, was zu einem Teil aus Algen besteht. Das meine ich mit umweltfreundlichen Varianten.
