It is kinda both.
Contrails are caused by the turbulence and vortexes as the jet moves through air with moisture. The different pressure differentials caused by the turbulence and vortexes compresses the moisture in the air.
Chemtrail because there is chemistry involved in the combustion of jet fuel. Just like any exhaust from a carbon based fuel engine. The exhaust is comprised of various molecules from the combustion process and particles from engine components wearing away.
Droplets of moisture often condense around particles in the air. Particles like dust and pollen that are lifted aloft to the cloud level. When the rain comes the particles are brought down to the ground.
By watching jets cross the sky you can get an assessment of the amount of moisture in the air mass the jet is flying through. No trail behind the jet, then it is likely flying through a dry air mass. A trail behind the jet, then it is likely flying through an air mass with water vapor.
Sometimes you will see a trail behind the jet and a little later there is no trail because of the different air masses it is flying through.
The winds aloft are responsible for dispersing the trails.
The great controversy over contrails versus chemtrails is whether or not the jets are deliberately spraying something out of nozzles or not, like a crop duster. And that is an entirely different subject.

'The winds aloft are responsible for dispersing the trails.' except when they don't. for hours. and spread out to grey the sky as noted by the op, and everyone who is aware that something is going on up there, and no authority is talking about it, as if nothing's going on, which our eyes tell us certainly is.
also, contrails don't drip.

Now I see why precipitation follows my seeing the trails. It's not causation but rather correlation. Only when there is enough moisture in the air are the contrails visible. And at those times it is more likely to later rain/snow within the next few days, even if it wasn't in the forecast previously.
I found a tweet from Physics & Astronomy Zone that shows the effect of wing-tip vortices. Please note that the plane is using a smoke spray to make the vortices visible.
It is an excellent example of the turbulence coming off the wing-tips of a plane.

I don't know what you mean. I wrote it to get input from those who better know the topic so I could decide, and I did. The science is explained by etcmike.
I have heard of these but some of the theories just went way above the belief I can hold in my mind. However, it may be myself not wanting to believe what some are capable of.

The only chemtrails theories that make sense to me aren't sinister, just governments hiding things from citizens who might disapprove and dishonesty. The British are known to have done cloud seeing back in the 50s and caused a flood. They denied it for decades until finally the documents were declassified. No reason to believe any government is telling its citizens everything.
To me the weather control to combat effects of global warming makes the most sense. I can see them trying to cause more rain as drought spreads. Or trying to deflect more of the sun's rays in places where warming is a direct problem, like the arctic. The rest of the theories make no sense to me.
But the science behind contrails explains a lot of it too. Just not the extreme changes in the entire sky within hours and then change of precipitation levels days later. Contrails folks would describe all that as coincidence. Which is harder to believe?

Weather modification isn't new, its been around since the 1950's.
As for any government being benevolent, and completely honest with its tax cattle, its not in their interest, contrary to what many believe.
Reality is often completely different than what we are told.
