The artificial glaciers which could help against climate change

in #environment7 years ago

An interesting article from the GUARDIAN the other day. It describes how a mechanical engineer called Sonam Wangchuk and a team of volunteers came up with the idea to build themselves artificial glaciers in the Himalayas to replace the vanishing natural ones and bringing water to the people and their crops as far as India.

The idea is simple and efficient: pump and release water in the shape of ice pyramids during the night, which melt evenly during the way to provide water for villages and fields. Moreover, these ice pyramids resemble closely the religious stupos which adorn the high plateaus of the Himalays, encouraging their adoption. The goal is to build 90 similar stupas across the Himalays, and to provide 1bn litres of water.

You can find here the own engineer speaking about his invention after receiving the Rolex prize for innovation:

It's great to see ingenious entrepreneurs devising new ways to tackle climate change and to bring hope to regions which would be defenseless otherwise.

Nice post. Thanks for sharing!

This is interesting.

But the Guardian article never mentions anything about climate change.
How would these artificial glaciers have any influence about climate change?

It does, but with a more roundabout way of telling it: <<Unnaturally high global temperatures threaten ice shelves everywhere – but researchers believe Himalayan glaciers are shrinking more quickly than any on earth.>> Indeed, they would not tackle so much climate change as the effects it could have.

Interesting. Thank's
