BUILDING MOVEMENTS FOR CHANGE #ENDPLASTICPOLLUTION

It has been well established that our main challenge as a country is the lack of transformational leadership and working institutions, our leaders are not able to effect the fundamental changes needed, so our national institutions don't work.

Barack Obama highlighted this fact on his visit to Ghana in 2009 with a profound quote.

''Africa doesn't need strong men, it needs strong institutions''.

 Aside from these challenges, most will state categorically that another problem they face as young people in this country is their lack of a collective voice, a voice with which they can articulate their problems and contributions to national growth.

''to have a voice in the real world means two things-to be able to influence the messaging of the media and to affect policies of parliament''.

Historically speaking, there is evidence that it is possible to achieve these two through movement building. this has been seen in Civil Right Movement, Tar Sands Action or Fossil fuel Divestment Movement, which shows that movement building can transform the thinking of people, and alter the systems that hold the status quo in place.

Coming together as masses of people to think and act politically could drive a transformational change. This is true based on the premise that every fundamental or transformational change is a political one, though that change itself cannot come from politics if not forced and demanded for by the people. The reason is that politicians mostly do things that are in their short-term interest. They will only act in the best interest of the public when the masses cause them to. Politicians and businesses have been shown to follow the direction that the public demands.

Change can only emanate from a movement from the people, for the people and by the people.
