Entrepreneurship | Aviasense - My First Venture

Prelude

Entrepreneurship seems to be the new trend these days, so of course I'd hop on this hype train! Since I graduated and came back to Malaysia 2.5 years ago, I'm continuously fascinated by the whole entrepreneur network and experience which lead me to attend lots of talks and networking events. But one thing I noticed was the breakdown of attendees:

  • 60% of the attendees are people interested in starting their own business but have no plans to do it yet
  • 20% are people who are just fascinated about the people and culture of entrepreneurship but have no interest in starting up a business
  • 10% are those who actually run their own startup.
  • remaining 10% are the others (dan lain-lain) who are maybe there to sell something, or just there for the free food/drinks

For a long time, I found myself in either the first or last category. But finally! I've met some like-minded individuals who have similar interest in Technology and we've decided to tackle a small service niche. Whether we'll make a ton of money doing this or not, I'm not sure, but our priority now is to just try, fail, learn, improve, try, fail, learn, improve repeat ad infinitum.

I'd like to introduce our startup (started in June 2017) and would really appreciate any feedback, ideas, recommendations, etc from any interested parties or experienced entrepreneurs, please share your knowledge and advice!

Without further ado, introducing

Aviasense

Aviasense is a combination of Aviation + Remote Sensing (ikr, mind = blown). We specialize in drone imagery and 360°/3D solutions, capturing and creating high-tech visuals for commercial & industrial purposes.

There are endless possibilities with these technologies, from surveying work of construction/mining/agriculture sites to monitoring for progress report and maintenance, to producing 360° virtual tours for real estate markets and hotels/restaurants. With our additional service of 3D animated modeling, we can even produce 3D models of a design in our images, videos and virtual tours before the actual building exists

Our virtual office provides some samples for our work: http://www.aviasense.com/asportfolio/

A few projects we've done include

  • Surveying a factory rooftop for a solar panel company to plan their installation
  • Surveying a mining quarry
  • Checking a building's paint job for water leaks and painting defects for a building maintenance company
  • Producing a 360 Virtual Tour for a real estate developers showroom
  • Producing a 360 Virtual Tour for a go-kart track
  • Producing drone footage for a beachside hotel's marketing video
  • Random events: Weddings, School Events, Drag Car Racing

Our Team

We're a small team of 5 including a drone pilot/builder (his team won 2nd and 3rd place in the recent Drone GP, very excited about this), a geologist/marketing enthusiast, a long-time e-commerce entrepreneur selling motorbike parts, a sales guy and myself, a little bit of everything.

What are we doing now?

Right now, we're focusing on two things: Developing our technology stack to allow us to do our work faster and more efficiently. This includes training ourselves to be more efficient with our drones, cameras and editing tools as well as purchasing higher grade equipment. And getting more projects. So far we've been fortunate enough to get a few jobs through friends and family, but as we grow, we definitely want to be more independent.

We're all technical people, so we're confident in our abilities to get the work done. It's the changing from a hobby to a business, growing a business, making connections part that we really need help with.

What do you guys think? What advice could you guys give? Eager to listen, thanks!

Here are some of our videos we did for fun:

Sort:

good job, you doing it full time already?

I'm not, but 2 of the 5 are. They're the guys who do the day-to-day operations and responsible for project delivery. hopefully the business will be able to make enough money for us all to work full time. but in the mean time, sticking to that 9 - 6 grind.
