Aleksa's Book Review: Zero to one
One of my greatest inspirations and, dare I say, idols, is the author of this book and founder of PayPal. It continues to amaze me how there can exist people who give up on life when there are such exemplars of achievement to be emulated. In any case, the book outlines the basics of this man's thought on the subject of entrepreneurship and business - and who else would we like to listen to?
Peter expands on the matter of enterprise competition through one of his best quotes of all time: "Competition is for losers." it simply does not make sense to go into any field of work unless you breathe, bleed, eat and excrete that which your company does, and you're also 10 times better than the next best alternative. Yes, that's "Blue Ocean Strategy", "The One Thing" and "The 10X Rule" all in one paragraph.
He even sneaks in a cheeky abridging of Rene Girard's thought on mimetic theory, violence and the sacred. Some time is given to the exhortation of the values that built up the PayPal mafia, and with good reason. Each member of that team is a powerhouse in their own right, and imagining the results of a re-grouping of those great men in a single room leave one with no recourse but to shudder in bewilderment.
In closing - probably a life-changing book were I 15 years old. Now - merely a very, very good book.
