Watch out for Anurag Kashyap's awesome drama and action movies
Usually, I am not actively following the works of individual movie makers, directors or actors. But one guy that really called my attention in the past few years was Anurag Kashyap.
In case you don't know him: Anurag is a movie director from Uttar Pradesh (India) who has made a number of great movies, mostly drama and action. Among my favorites are Dev.D and Gangs of Wasseypur (part 1 and 2).
Gangs of Wasseypur tells the story of a family plus their counterparts who over a few generations participate in organized crime and politics in India, starting out very small and becoming bigger throughout the years. There are obvious parallels to other famous movies like The Godfather or City of God which following some interviews have inspired the director. Below you find the trailer for the first part. In case you don't understand Hindi just watch it to get an impression of the pictures. And then go out and find the whole movie with subtitles. Believe me, it is worth it!
The other movie, Dev.D, is a modern adaption of the classical story of Devdas written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1917. The original story pictures the conflict between two Bengali families and their children Devdas and Parvati who although being childhood friends are encountering difficulties to overcome social differences once they become young adults. Sounds like some Shakespeare drama? Yes, it is a little bit like that. But there is a second woman involved...
Over the past 90 years about 15 movies in different languages have been made based on that story. And Kashyap's Dev.D is one of the newer, modern adaptions in which the lonely hero Dev is coming back to India after spending a few years in the UK. Back home he encounters the traditional structures of his family which do not fit into his new Western individualistic party lifestyle any longer. A great story about traditions and modernity. And an awesome soundtrack!
There are a lot of scenes on youtube from this movie (and from other movies of the same story) but the original trailer is hard to find there. Tune.pk has it though:
