How Funny the Pet owners warned over rise of ZOMBIE raccoons
Many calls have been made to police in Ohio after occupants announced an intrusion of "zombie" raccoons.
Officers in the city of Youngstown are exploring reports of the creatures acting peculiarly in the daytime.
The typically nighttime animals have been seen remaining on their rear legs, uncovering their teeth and afterward falling over in reverse.
Picture taker Robert Coggeshall said he was playing with his pooches outside his home a week ago when one of the raccoons moved toward them.
"He would stand up on his rear legs, which I've never observed a raccoon do, and he would go on the defensive and afterward he would fall over in reverse and go into right around an insensible condition," Mr Coggeshall told the news office WKBN.
That raccoon, alongside 14 others that police reacted to, have been euthanised.
Nearby authorities say the creatures were likely experiencing distemper - a viral sickness that causes hacking, tremors, seizures and leads raccoons to lose their dread of people.
