Millions of people have watched this mom's relatable 'Bodak Yellow' rap about parenting
A mom who loves rap music has become a social media celeb for a Cardi B parody starring her adorable kids.
Motherhood hasn’t quenched Cali Daniels‘s love of rap music, so she’s found a way to share it with her three children — Gracie, 8, Lia 6, and Cohen, 3 — by rewriting popular songs with lyrics all parents can relate to.
Her new video is an ode to Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow,” and features Daniels, who calls herself “The Rap Mom,” in the car with her children, singing about grocery store antics, schoolwork, and bedtime.
“Little kids, you can’t mess with me if you wanted to,” raps Daniels, while her children bop along to the beat. “Where you started from?/I am the bottom, I gave birth to you/Hit the store, you can’t get them both, no you gotta choose/I’m quick, cut them rewards off, so don’t get comfortable.”
The mom from Dennison, Texas, who works as a restaurant server, first went viral a year ago with her parody of Fetty Wrap’s “Trap Queen,” which received more than 21 million views on Facebook. “This all began as something fun to do with my kids in the car,” Daniels tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “I love rap — it gets me going — and I’ve always let my kids listen to the clean, radio versions that are suitable. My children thought it was funny when I changed the lyrics, so I decided to put more thought into it.”
It takes Daniels only a few days to write and memorize each song, which she tries to mimic as closely as possible to the original, and she allows her kids some creative input. “They really love it, but they’re a little shy on camera,” she says. “When it’s just us, they go wild.”
Daniels is working on such future projects as funny parenting skits, and she’s even writing her own rap songs for parents. “Moms always tell me I inspire them to have more fun with their kids,” she says. “That makes me feel good".
