Attack on Titan :

 

AoT Fact 1:

• The name "Attack on Titan" is an inaccurate translation of the Japanese "Shingeki No Kyoujin," which actually means "Advancing Titans." The creator of the series was so convinced he knew English well enough to translate, he told them what the English name "should" be before they ever consulted any actual english speakers.

              

AoT Fact 2:

• The creator says that the inspiration for the Titans came from when he left a internet cafe late one night, and a stranger tried to talk to him. The stranger was so incredibly wasted, that it was impossible to understand what he was trying to say, or even what he wanted. He liked the idea of being unable to communicate with something that was so close to human, and ended up using it for his manga.

Cowboy Bebop :

 

Cowboy Bebop fact :

• In Cowboy Bebop, the episode "Mushroom Samba" and the song used in it, "Mushroom Hunting" were made completely independently of each other. In the show's commentary, Yoko Kanno reveals she wrote the song as a joke because she likes mushrooms, and thought the writers made the episode because of the song. The writers had assumed she had written the song specifically for the episode.

Berserk :

• The creator of Berserk, Kentaro Miura is an an incredibly huge fan of "Idolmaster," a video game franchise about raising girls into J-pop idols. He's such a huge fan of it to the point that you can easily track when he will take a hiatus from the series based off when the next game is coming out.

Gurren Lagann :

Gurren Lagann fact :

• Gurren Lagann was made by the same studio that made Neon Genesis Evangelion, but the interesting part comes from the fact that the entire series was meant to be the exact opposite of everything NGE had done, which is a series that had defined exactly what was expected of a mecha show for the previous decade.

The series began life as an incredibly (INCREDIBLY) shittily drawn webcomic.

                

OPM Fact 2 :

• After drawing the webcomic for years in relative obscurity, he announced on twitter he was considering giving up continuing the OPM webcomic so he could focus on his actual job, professional mangaka Yusuke Murata, who was a huge fan, contacted him and said he would redraw the webcomic as a professional manga for sale, under the condition that ONE (OPM's creator) continue drawing the webcomic.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure :

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure fact :

• jojo's Bizarre Adventure is a series that has been continually published since 1987, starting with "Phantom Blood." The series is hugely influential on anime and manga, is is responsible for many of the ideas that continue to appear. It was one of the first (maybe THE first) series to take care with its fight scenes, creating an actual narrative behind why a character wins the fight beyond "He's so super duper strong and righteous." It was also one of the first to have fights based around magical abilities and not physical martial arts. In Part 2, ""Battle Tendencies," the writer realized that if fights are based around magical abilities, then physical appearance would have very little to do with their abilities, and created the first female mentor/sensei figure, to showcase this point.

Code Geass :

• Code Geass has to be heavily edited for broadcast in America. In Japan, Pizza Hut paid to have their Pizza Hut product placement in the show. The show ended up putting Pizza Hut deliveries, boxes, shops, and ads absolutely everywhere in their show, well beyond the scope Pizza Hut had actually paid for because everyone working on the show thought it would be funny. When the show was brought to America, this was a big problem for Pizza Hut. The plot of the show hinges around a teenager basically conquering a country through viciously effective domestic terrorism. Reasonable, Pizza Hut of America thought that associating their brand with terrorism in the USA would be bad, and demanded all Pizza Hut product placement be edited out.

Death Note :

Death Note fact :

• The creator of Death Note has stated that he didn't intend there to be any sort of thought-provoking discussions on the nature of justice or good and evil in the show. He just wanted to make "An entertaining story," and claims any subtext was pure accident.

The Big O :

The Big O fact :

• The Big O is (to my knowledge) the only Japanese made animation specifically made with the intention of selling to a western audience. While the show did expectedly bad in Japan, it was given a second season solely due to it's popularity on Cartoon Network.
