English Phrasal Verbs (145/365) - Shut (Someone) In

in #englishphrasalverbs6 years ago (edited)

To shut someone in means putting a person or an animal in an enclosed place so that they can't leave.

Example sentence:

  • You shouldn't shut in your dogs for too long. If you do, there will be unpleasant consequences.

A shut-in is a recluse who avoids contact with the outside world by staying indoors most of the time. In Japan, such people are called hikikomori.

Sort:

Hikikomori........... I could relate to that, not completely though. I guess these things are common in all parts of the world.

The Japanese guy is probably right about that his reasoning for the upsurge if hikikomori in japan. Although there would be far too many dynamics in the play to cover in just one segment.

We do say some folks are shut ins.

Very interesting article! So, anybody can shut oneself in too!

oneself decides to be or be locked
