WHO Recommendation on Infant Feeding

As stated in the Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding (WHA55 A55 / 15, paragraph 10):

Breastfeeding is an unparalleled way to provide an ideal food for the healthy growth and development of infants; It is also an integral part of the reproductive process, with important repercussions on the health of mothers. As a global public health recommendation, during the first six months of life infants should be exclusively breastfed1 to achieve optimal growth, development and health2.

From then on, in order to meet their evolving nutritional requirements, infants should receive adequate and nutritionally safe complementary foods, without abandoning breastfeeding until two years of age, or later. Exclusive breastfeeding can be practiced from birth, except in the case of some medical conditions, and if it is practiced without limitations, it promotes an abundant production of milk.

1 "Exclusive breastfeeding" means that the child receives only breast milk (including expressed or suckling milk) during the first 6 months of life, and no other food or drink, not even water, except for oral rehydration salts, drops and the syrups (vitamins, minerals and medicines).

"Predominant breastfeeding" means that the predominant source of infant feeding is breast milk (including expressed or suckling milk). The child can also receive liquids (water and water-based beverages, fruit juices), ritual liquids and oral rehydration salts, drops or syrups (vitamins, minerals and medicines).
